The newly elected President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nasir Isa Fagge, has said that the union would not embark on strike again if the Federal Government sustains its present effort at improving the state of tertiary education in Nigeria.
Fagge, who was responding to questions from journalists on the sidelines of the new executives visit to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) yesterday in Abuja, said ASUU always explore means of dialogue before embarking on strike.
“African countries like Ghana and South Africa have spent up to 30 per cent of their annual budget on education in the last 25 years that is why today many of our students are going there to study but we must do all we can to retain our manpower,” he said.
Executive Secretary of TETFund Professor Mahmood Yakubu disclosed that 624 lecturers out of 5,800 who are studying within and outside the country under the fund’s sponsorship have returned to their tertiary institutions.
