"If Nigeria Will Break, Let It Break!" - Bishop Oyedepo

The General Overseer of Living Faith Church, a.k.a Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo was recently profiled alongside Pastor Tunde Bakare and other vocal Nigerians in a video on Sahara TV discussing the current threat to Nigeria's unity.

In a message to members of his church on a Sunday Service, the reverred bishop is heard insisting that Nigeria’s unity is not sacrosanct. “If the nation will break, let it break. Marriage is not by force,” Bishop Oyedepo insisted.

Many believe the Bishop's statement was a reaction to the continuous killing of innocent Christians by members of Boko Haram in the North.

James Ibori ‘ll still be tried in Nigeria

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, said yesterday that the former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Onanefe Ibori who pleaded guilty to a 10-count charge of money laundering at a London Court will still stand trial whenever he returns to the country.

Ibori had pleaded guilty to fraud, stealing and money laundering charges before a Southwark Crown Court in London on Monday.

The EFCC, according to a statement signed by its Acting Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said it “received with happiness, the news yesterday, February 27, 2012 to the effect that the former governor of Delta State, Chief James Onanefe Ibori had pleaded guilty to fraud, stealing and money laundering charges before a Southwark Crown Court in London. This, indeed, is a welcome development which vindicates the Commission’s position ab initio that Ibori had a case to answer.”

He noted that the interesting aspect of the development in London is the fact that Ibori chickened out of a full blown fraud and money laundering trial by changing his plea.

According to the statement: “This was purely a gambit to run away with a lighter sentence, rather than the product of a plea bargain as erroneously reported earlier in sections of the media. For the avoidance of doubt, plea bargain is not recognized in UK criminal justice system.

“Sadly, it has taken five years of legal rigmarole and high drama for the former governor to own up to having committed some of the crimes for which Justice Marcel Awokulehin of the Federal High Court, Asaba, sensationally acquitted him in December, 2009. The Commission challenged the ruling. That appeal is still pending before the Court of Appeal, Benin City, Edo State.

“While the EFCC looks forward to the sentencing of Ibori on April 16, it is however, a matter of concern that it took the intervention of the UK criminal justice system for justice to be served in the Ibori case. While all who worry over the effect of corruption on our nation may celebrate the Ibori guilt plea, we must all spare a thought for our judiciary, which needs urgent reform to ensure that those who loot our treasury do not get away with their loot.”

According to the statement, “in deed, Nigerians must rally in support of the dogged efforts of the incumbent Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Dahiru Musdapher to reform the judiciary for greater efficiency.

“Now that Ibori has owned up to his crime, the Commission is mindful of the concern in some quarters as to what becomes of his case with the EFCC. Will he be arrested and tried again on the completion of his jail term in London? Or, will the EFCC close the Ibori case?”

It added that: “For the benefit of stakeholders and lovers of justice, it is interesting to note that the offences for which Ibori faces imminent jail term in London is only a minute aspect of the bouquet of offences committed by the former governor during his eight year rule of Delta State.

“The bulk of the criminal charges against the former governor are still before courts in Nigeria and there are no plans to vacate those charges. Moreover, the former governor didn’t steal alone. There were accomplices and as recent as two weeks ago, some persons who allegedly assisted him to launder stolen funds were questioned by the Commission. EFCC is determined to bring all Ibori accomplices to book, no matter how long it takes.

“For now, the Commission awaits the sentencing of Ibori and, more importantly, the repatriation of the funds stolen from the treasury of Delta State government. That will be some just reward to Nigerians for the efforts and resources that have been committed to the corruption and money laundering investigation and trial of Chief James Ibori.”

Pirates kidnap two in attack off Nigeria

Armed pirates opened fire on a cargo ship in an attack off the Nigerian coast, kidnapping the captain and chief engineer and robbing the crew before escaping, a maritime watchdog said Wednesday.

Tuesday’s attack also left one crew member missing and another injured, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) said, and was the latest in a series of incidents indicating heightened piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

The assault at about 1500 GMT Tuesday targeted a Dutch-owned, Curacao-flagged refrigerated cargo ship that was anchored near the coast, said Noel Choong, head of the IMB’s Kuala Lumpur-based piracy reporting centre.

A group of about eight pirates armed with guns carried out the attack on the ship, which had a crew of 14, he said, adding that Nigerian authorities had been alerted.

Choong said he had received no word yet on the fate of those reported missing or whether any ransom was being demanded.

“The attacks off the Nigerian coast are very violent and they are increasing,” Choong said.

“So far we have seen seven attacks off Nigeria this year and one off of Benin. So that makes eight since the beginning of the year and we believe many more attacks may have gone unreported.”

Two weeks ago, pirates fired on a cargo vessel off Nigeria, killing the ship’s captain, according to the IMB.

Choong said that vessel’s chief engineer died from a fall during the attack, correcting earlier reports that he also had been shot dead.

That ship was Panamanian-flagged but its owners were Taiwanese, he said.

The IMB has said other recent attacks in the area included a tanker that was hijacked south of Nigeria earlier in February. Nigerian vessels intercepted that ship and rescued its crew.

The IMB, which is funded by shipowners, warned in September that the seas off Benin, Nigeria’s neighbour, were emerging as a new piracy “hotspot” due to the weak enforcement capabilities of governments in the region.

For macheting her 11 years old stepson to death, a 30-year-old housewife, Rukayat Alalade, has been arrested by men of the Nigeria Police Force, Oyo State Command.

It was gathered that the suspect, whose husband,Lukman Alalade, married after he separated from his first wife, had always haboured ill-feelings for her two stepchildren.

According to sources, the dastardly act was committed on Valentine's Day after the boy, identified as Qudus, returned from an errand on which his stepmother sent him.

Angry that the boy was late in coming from where she sent him to buy kerosene, the suspect reportedly descended on him with a macheted him. She reportedly cut him on the head and hand until he gave up the ghost.

After accomplishing her mission, Mrs. Alalade dragged the remains of the little boy to the backyard of the family’s building and hid the cutlass under the bed.

Her wicked deed was, however, blown open when the husband came back and could not see his son. Though she initially denied knowledge of the deceased’s whereabouts, a trail of his blood was followed to where his body was eventually discovered at the backyard.

It was then that bloodstains were noticed on the woman’s cloth, while the cutlass was found under the bed in the couple’s room.

The suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigations and prosecution.

T.B. Joshua Predicts Suicide Bombing On Nigerian Aircraft

The man of God has warned Nigerians flying local airlines in the country to be very prayerful while boarding any flight as, according to him, God has shown him an imminent plane crash.

Prophet Joshua said the crash will not be caused by technical fault but by a security breach.

In his words: “The plane crash, if not averted, will involved one of Nigeria’s local flights. I wish to therefore advise Nigerians to pray zealously so that the country will not experience such a disaster, which might claim the lives of many government officials.

As part of measures to avoid being a victim of the crash, people who want to travel by air should always recite Psalm 91 before boarding any aircraft in order to ensure safe land.”

Please don't just ignore this warning. A word is enough for the wise.

Trailer crushes graduate selling roasted yam in Ekiti

Yesterday I posted a story about the

Graduate Selling Plantain and Roasted Corn In Suit By The Road Side

Some people never believed that graduates in Nigeria are in deep trouble.

Today, I read about a tragic story in Ikere-Ekiti on Tuesday as the back of a trailer detached, hit an abandoned tanker and crushed a 27-year-old graduate selling roasted yam.

Although the lady was rescued and taken to a hospital immediately after the accident, she later died after about two hours.

The lady, Busayo Akogun, a graduate of College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, was said to be assisting her mother at a roadside kiosk when the accident occurred. Her mother was also said to have been crushed against the wall of a filling station and sustained a serious injury.

One of the eyewitnesses, Mr. Adekunle Olowolafe, said the legs of the mother were crushed.

Blood stains were seen in the rubble while personal effects of the victims littered the scene when our correspondent visited the area.

But the grill and the local oven on which the lady and her mother were roasting the yam were still standing while the roasted yams were well set on the grill.

Policemen and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps who arrived the scene quickly evacuated the victims to a hospital.

But some of the sympathisers who assisted the officials later returned and said Akogun had died.

Also, two trailers and a Golf car were involved in another accident at Aramoko-Ekiti on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses told our correspondent on the telephone that the trailers collided and their impact affected the car.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti State, Mr. Mohammed Jimoh, who confirmed the accidents to our correspondent, said two persons were injured in the Ikere accident and nobody was injured in Aramoko.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor of the state, Mrs. Funmi Olayinka, who was among those who first visited the Ikere-Ekiti accident scene, has cautioned drivers to always obey traffic rules.

The deputy governor who noted that over speeding and lack of consideration for other road users was common among trailers’ drivers, warned them to be cautious on the road.

Information gathered by The Finder newspaper indicated that Felivian A. Ayariga, alias Dion, 26 who hails from Bolgatanga was arrested by the police in January this year.

Felivian a model, whose image is posted on a billboard of a textile industry, around Koala Shopping Mall at Osu has been Rabiu’s girlfriend for more than five years.

According to the police, the model was arrested because she whisked Rabiu away after a shootout between the police and him (Rabiu) near the Accra Girls Senior High School in January where he sustained several injuries to a hotel around Madina.

The police laid ambush in the house of Felivian who arrived late in the night and arrested her to help locate the hide-out of Rabiu. Felivian declined knowing the whereabouts of his boyfriend until persistent pressure from the police.

She later led police to a hotel at Madina, but before the police got to the hotel; they were told Rabiu had left few minutes ago.

Further investigations revealed that proceeds from any robbery of Rabiu were always shared in the house of Felivian at East Legon, Shiashi and some hotels in Accra. Rabiu grew up in Maamobi in Accra is said to have spend most of his life in prison and during infancy he was sent to the Borstal Institute.

Rabiu, a Togolese alias Raba was gunned down with one accomplice, Sam Peters a Nigerian in a shootout with the police at Ogbodzo near Madina a suburb of Accra last Friday.

The model admitted that she was in a relationship with Rabiu but never knew he was an armed robber. The Finder also gathered that two teenage girls (names withheld) both 19 years of age dated by Rabiu were lured to the Regional Police Command for interrogations.

The girls are said to be in Junior High School (JHS) Two and Senior High School (SHS) One respectively in Accra and Cape Coast.

Rabiu is said to have met the JHS girl when she was on her way to the hospital and offered her lift with an amount of GH¢5. They later exchanged numbers and the two started communication resulting in a relationship.

With regards to the SHS girl, Rabiu was said to have offered her help while he met her selling corn and groundnuts. Rabiu offered to help her further with her education and gave her GH¢350 to register for remedial which also led to a relationship between the two.

A visit by the Regional Command and the press to Madina Agbogbloshie area on Saturday revealed that Rabiu was putting up a storey building.

According to the Deputy Regional Commander, ACP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, intelligence revealed that Rabiu bought the land on which he was building at GH¢21,000.

He said according to Felivian, she knew Rabiu was building but indicated that Rabiu processed the document relating to the building in the name of his elder brother which she was not enthused about.

Briefing the media earlier in the hours of Saturday, the Accra Regional Commander, COP Rose Bio Atinga and her Deputy, ACP Yohuno said on Friday at about 5pm, the police had a tip off that armed robbers had planned to attack a Nigerian national in a house at Ogbodzo.

The operation team laid ambush in the said residence and within some few minutes three armed men on two motorbikes rode into the house.

COP Atinga said Rabiu and Peters and one other accomplice who is on the run known as Ramani engaged the police in a fierce battle and in the process Rabiu and Peters were killed.

Until Rabiu’s death, he had committed several robberies in and around the country.

The robberies include the recent killing of the police officer at Tema UBA Bank in January, Antis Company at Agbogba both this year, Haatso Forex Bureau robbery, the Accra Shopping Mall robbery in August last year, the killing of the Managing Director of Louis Gas Filling Station, Mr. Louis Kofi Badu at Madina in 2010.

Items recovered on the deceased, include two foreign pistols, 10 rounds of ammunitions, three mobile phones and a talisman worn by Peters.

Information says a document was found on Rabiu which indicated that he had a foreign account and he was going to withdraw some money from the bank (name withheld) in the name of Baba Adams.

The Command cautioned the armed robbers, stating that “you will run but you cannot hide”, adding that they would always get hold of them.

COP Atinga said most of the crack robbers had all been apprehended and thanked the public for the effort in assisting the police in combating crime.

Student Commits Suicide Over a divorcee.

DISTRAUGHT over persistent calls to end a relationship with a woman older than him, a third-year student of Bodwesango Senior High School in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti region has hanged himself.

Peter Akom aka Amakye, a General Arts student, took his life on Sunday night in his friend’s room at Bodwesango.

The tragic death of the 19-year-old has left his younger sister, Joyce Akom, 16, devastated as she continuously scratches her head for answers and blames their mother, Abena Nyamaa, for Peter’s death.

The boy’s body, which was hanging by a sponge from a ceiling made of wood, was discovered by his friend, who screamed to attract people to the scene around 7:00 pm.

This is the first case of suicide to have hit Bodwesango Senior High School that has maintained a low profile.

Abena Nyamaa, mother of the victim, stands accused of nagging her son over his relationship with a 26-year-old divorcee, Yaa Manu, leading to his death on Sunday night.

She was said to have raced to Bodwesango from Asikaso, a village in the area, to quarrel with her son on the day in question following misinformation relayed to her.

Abena Nyamaa said she was informed that Peter Akom was getting married to Yaa Manu without her knowledge and against her wish, but the information turned out to be false.

Instead, the ceremony turned out to be Yaa Manu’s apprenticeship graduation that was attended by Peter.

She admitted that she had warned her son to stay away from Yaa Manu, a hair dresser apprentice, but the boy would not listen despite his poor academic performance.

She therefore decided to embarrass the boy to stop him from seeing the divorcee, whom he was living.

But the boy, who felt embarrassed by the action that was the fourth in a series of arguments and petty quarrelling between mother and son, allegedly threatened to kill himself, and finally carried out his threat after the ceremony.

The boy was wearing boxer shorts and a singlet when his body, which has been deposited at the Bekwai Government Hospital morgue, was discovered, Chief Inspector Mensah stated.

Lover of the deceased, Yaa Manu, told news men that Peter took the extreme step because he was fed up with his mother’s nagging.

According to her, she and Peter had been in relationship for two years, but did not enjoy the blessing of Peter’s mother.

Victim bites off rapist’s tongue

The South African Police Service (SAPS), has said that a rape suspect, whose tongue was bitten off by the victim would appear in court when discharged from hospital.

SAPS spokesman, Lt. Col. Leonard Hlathi, told newsmen in Johannesburg on Tuesday that a teenager bit off a man’s tongue while she was being raped.

“The 17-year-old girl was held up by an armed man and his accomplice, and dragged into a bush on Monday. The man with the gun told his partner to get alcohol and some friends, to gang rape the girl.

“He then forcefully undressed her and began to rape her.

“In the process, the suspect tried to kiss the victim, but she bit off his tongue and ran to a nearby house for help,” he said.

He said the Police were alerted and they tracked down the man and arrested him.

“The man is being kept under police guard in hospital, and is expected to appear in court when discharged.”

He also said the Police was looking for another man whose finger and tongue were bitten off by a woman he raped last Friday.

“The woman was hitch-hiking to Carolina on Friday, when the man gave her a lift around 6p.m.

“The man stopped the car near Mooiplaas farm and hit the woman with a soft drink bottle several times on the upper body; he then dragged the woman to the bushes and raped her.

“While raping the woman, the man tried to kiss her but she bit off half of his tongue, forcing him to jump away in pain.”

Hlathi said the suspect tried to get hold of the woman again, “ She then bit off the little finger of his right hand and ran away, leaving the two body parts at the scene.

“It seemed the man fled with his finger and piece of the tongue, because police did not find them at the scene. We are appealing to members of the public to help us arrest him”.

He said the woman was receiving treatment in a hospital.

“The suspect was still at large. But a case of rape had been opened for investigation.

A homecoming photo of a US Marine kissing his boyfriend went viral yesterday after it was posted on Facebook. But before you start 'hating', here's what Brandon Morgan, the marine said about the photo

To everyone who has responded in a positive way. My partner and I want to say thank you. Dalan, the giant in the photo, can't believe how many shares and likes we have gotten on this.

We didn't do this to get famous,or something like that we did this cause after 3 deployments and four years knowing each other, we finally told each other how we felt. As for the haters, let em hate.

We are the happiest we have ever been and as for the whole PDA and kissing slash hugging in uniform...it was a homecoming, if the Sergeants Major, Captains, Majors, and Colonels around us didn't care...then why do you care what these random people have to say? In summation thank you for your love and support.

14 year old boy shoots his mother dead as she slept

A 14-year-old boy, Joshua Smith, in the early hours of Monday morning, shot his mother, 36 year old Tamiko Robinson, at least ten times as she slept on the couch, his uncle told reporters after the teenager was arrested.

The teen, from east Detroit, was said to be angry that his mother had tried to keep him off the streets and away from a gang.

Smith's uncle LeShaun Roberts, told Fox Detroit News the teen had wanted to 'hang with the big boys' - gang members in their twenties - but when his mother said no he ran away to relatives. But Robinson, a dialysis patient, who was battling lupus, went after her son and insisted he came home, angering the youngster.

According to the uncle, Joshua broke into his step dad's room, got a twelve gauge and brutally murdered his mother while she slept on the couch in their home.

Joshua's five-year-old sister and step dad, were in the home at the time and were forced to jump out of a low window to escape the gunfire.

Smith was arrested soon after the shooting. He had reportedly been driving around in his mother's car.

5 Things Not to Do After a Break Up

1. Don’t Call.

Unless you want to apologize, reconcile, or lose every last shred of personal pride you have left, do not pick up that phone. When you break up with someone, make it as clean a break as possible. Calling will only make the wound fester and distract you from the new life that you have to build now without your ex. Use your energy for more productive things. Take the phone off the hook if need be. Remove your ex’s phone number from your call-back options on your cell. Until you’re completely over it, the phone is not your friend.

2. Don’t Cut or Burn Your Photos.

Though it might be tempting to take a scissors and stab your ex through the head, don’t do it. First, it’s kinda nuts. Second, if you ever do get back together it’ll be hard to explain. And third, the pictures tell a story of your past and should be honored as such. If destruction seems like too much of a temptation, box up the memories and give them to a friend for safekeeping until you’ve cooled off.

3. Don’t Mope.

Easier said than done-we all know how crushing break ups can be. And we also know that everyone needs a period of mourning. But set a time limit for yourself. Give yourself a few days to cry, brood, and curse wicked fate for your broken heart. Decide that you’re only going to eat so many pints of Ben & Jerry’s. Then get busy. Doing what? Anything. Stay occupied and try to be pleasant to be around even if you want to burst into tears every time “your song” comes on the radio.

4. Don’t Rebound.

While it’s healthy and self-affirming to enjoy the company of someone new, be careful not to make commitments you can’t keep. Go out on dates, learn to see yourself through the eyes of new people, make new friends and even distract yourself with the appreciation of someone you’re attracted to. But don’t let the L word slip past your lips until you’re completely over your ex. Giving someone else false expectations about the potential for a relationship when you’re still nursing your wounds is a pretty lousy thing to do, and will only make you feel guiltier in the long run.

5. Don’t try to Get Revenge.

A friend of mine once tried to get back at her homophobic ex by subscribing him to a gay magazine. When it arrived at his dorm, he assumed his gay neighbor had sent it to him, and started a fist-fight. This incident spiraled so far out of control that her boyfriend ended up hurting a fellow student, and being expelled from school. Not exactly the consequence she was looking for. As tempting as it may be to get even with someone who has hurt you, living well is often the best revenge. Nothing will get back at your ex so well as seeing you happy, healthy, and having completely moved on. So focus on you, not on the ex. (But feel free to fantasize about all the evil things you could do to get revenge if you want; thoughts are free.)

Two Men defile 18-month-old baby for Money Ritual

The two assailants appeared before a Guruve magistrate charged with rape. One of the men told the court that a traditional healer had advised him to use the blood from the baby’s private parts when cooking so that people would continue to patronise his restaurant.

Jokonya (30) and Masango (26) appeared before Guruve magistrate Mr Silas Chitongo, who remanded them in custody to today.

The state led by prosecutor Mr Courage alleged that on Christmas Day last year at around 10pm, Jokonya and Masango entered the kitchen hut where the victim was sleeping with her mother.

Masango allegedly approached the mother of the baby girl and grabbed her by the leg as she slept.

The woman managed to free herself and fled towards the village head’s homestead.

Masango allegedly gave chase while Jokonya remained behind in the kitchen hut where the complainant was sleeping.

When he failed to catch the woman, Masango returned where he had left Jokonya.

The village head teamed up with other villagers and accompanied the mother of the victim back to her house where they found the two and the baby gone.

Jokonya reportedly raped the minor while Masango watched.

The two then left the baby in a nearby bush and went away leaving her crying.

The following day the mother picked up a cellphone belonging to Masango near her house leading to his arrest. Masango then implicated Jokonya who was also arrested.

Later that day the mother heard her daughter crying in the bush and discovered that she was raped. The child was rushed to St Albert’s Mission Hospital for medical examination.

Masango told the court that he had assisted Jokonya to rape the baby because he had promised to give him two cattle.

Jokonya said a traditional healer had advised him to use the blood from the private parts when preparing food so that people would continue to come and buy at his restaurant.

Police arraign woman for pouring faeces on banker

The Police in Akure, Tuesday, arraigned a 28-year-old woman, Folashade Babatunde before an Akure Senior Magistrate’s Court for allegedly pouring faeces on a female banker.

The accused, a trader and Higher National Diploma student at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo in Ondo State was docked before Mrs Rabi Abdulahi on a two-count charge of act likely to cause breach of the peace and assault.

Babatunde was accused of pouring faeces on one Agnes Olasehinde, a 27-year-old banker with the First Bank Plc, Alagbaka branch, Akure.

The offence, according to the Police Prosecutor, ASP Ayodele Atandeyi, was allegedly committed on February 24, about 12.30 p.m. at the First Bank Plc, Alagbaka branch, Akure.

She was accused of conducting herself in a manner likely to cause breach of the peace by bringing into the banking hall a can containing faeces.

This, the police said constituted an offence contrary to and punishable under section 249 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. I laws of Ondo State 2006.

Babatunde was also accused of assaulting Olasehinde by pouring faeces on her body, contrary to and punishable under Section 351 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. I laws of Ondo State 2006.

The accused person who elected summary trial at the court pleaded not guilty to the two charges when they were read to her in English language.

But in her statement to the police, the accused, who gave her address as No. 47, Ekusi Street, Owo, admitted that she poured the faces on Olasehinde because she was going out with her husband.

Atandeyi informed the court that he had two witnesses to call to prove the case against the accused person and asked for an adjournment to enable him study the case file.

The Counsel to the accused person, Mr Christopher Titiloye, did not object to the adjournment sought by the prosecutor, but urged the court to admit his client to bail pending the final determination of the matter.

In her ruling, the magistrate granted bail to the accused person in the sum of N100,000 and two sureties in like sum, who must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

The sureties, the court ruled must swear to affidavit of means and must be property owners in the jurisdiction of the court.

Abdulahi adjourned the matter to March 27, for hearing.

Gunmen invade police station and bank in Bauchi

Gunmen hurled explosives and fired at a police station and a nearby bank in Bauchi town Monday in another of daily attacks blamed on Islamist sect Boko Haram, witnesses said.

The attack in Jama’are, a traditional emirate and town in the north of Bauchi state, occurred 24 hours after a similar assault in another northern Nigerian town in which three policemen were killed.

Residents said a large number of gunmen were involved in the attack, but were unclear about casualties.

“They arrived in cars and headed straight to the police station and a nearby bank, shooting and throwing explosives,” said Tijjani Khalifa by phone from the town.

He said residents quickly moved indoors on hearing the sound of the explosions and gunshots.

“We don’t know if there are casualties because everybody is at home,” said another resident Muktar Dan-Abba.

Members of Boko Haram are thought to rob banks to fund their activities.

Bauchi borders and lies to the north of Plateau, whose capital Jos was targeted by a suicide bomber on a church during Sunday service.

The Jos attack killed three people while reprisal riots that followed the attack left another three dead.

Boko Haram claimed to have been behind the church attack where a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden car and blew it up metres away from a church hall.

Violence blamed on the group, whose goals remain largely unclear, has since mid-2009 claimed more than 1,000 lives, including more than 300 this year alone, according to AFP and rights groups.

The sect has previously said it wants to create an Islamic state in Nigeria’s deeply impoverished north.

Three police corporals were killed Sunday night and two other policemen wounded when gunment threw explosives and opened fire on a police station in Shuwa village of Adamawa state, northern Nigeria, state police commissioner Adelere Chinaba said.

A housewife in Badarawa area of Kaduna State is seeking clarification for divorce from the Sharia Court, due to persistent ridiculing and harassment by her husband because of her inability to get pregnant.

Maimuna Ibrahim had told the court that Alkasim Ibrahim, her husband had sent her away to her parents for failing to conceive nine months after marriage.

She sued Ibrahim, 26, for ridiculing her and for always referring to her as “barren.”

She also told the court that her husband had in addition to humiliating her, sent her back to her parents for them to get concoction for her to be pregnant.

Maimuna said she was in the court for redress as well as to know whether she could seek for divorce based on her husband’s action.

Ibrahim, however, denied sending her back to her parents and also denied her claimed that he was tired of living with her.

He urged the court to save his marriage by giving him time to reconcile with his wife.

The Presiding Officer, Malam Ibrahim Inuwa, warned Ibrahim against challenging the power of God as “He is the only one who gives children.”

He advised him to believe in destiny rather that blaming his wife for not conceiving and granted them 10 days to reconcile their differences.

He adjourned the case to March 8 for further hearing.

We Pushed Jonathan To Remove Fuel Subsidy - BABANGIDA

It was revelations galore at a public gathering in Lagos on Monday as Nigerians were told that all the 36 State Governors, without exception, pushed President Goodluck Jonathan to remove fuel subsidy.

The disclosure was made by non other than the Governor of Niger State and Chairman of Northern Governors Forum, Mua’zu Aliyu Babangida, while delivering a lecture on ‘Governance, Social Conflict and the imperatives of Communal Harmony’.

“When the issue of fuel subsidy came up, all of us, I mean all the governors with no exception, literarily ‘pushed’ the President to remove the subsidy on fuel. This is because before the monthly allocation is given, lots of deductions had taken place and little is left for the states and local governments.”

He however said the Governors had to stop the pressure when some politicians started committing treason in the name of “Occupy Nigeria”.

The outspoken Governor further decried the current situation whereby some States earned more allocations than the others, saying such development had placed some States in “paradise” while others are in “purgatory”.

Girl Hospitalized After Boyfriend Deceived Her Into Abortion

For deceiving his girlfriend to take abortion pills that have landed her in critical condition at the hospital, a 25 year old mechanic, Idris Oke, was on Monday arraigned before an Abuja Chief Magistrate’s Court.

In the matter before Chief Magistrate Okeagu Azubike, Idris was charged with conspiracy and aborting the pregnancy of his girlfriend, Miss Janet Onah. The police prosecutor, Philips Akogwu, told the court that Miss Janet, a resident of Kuruduma village, Abuja, reported the case at Asokoro Police Station on February 21.

According to court document, the accused and a pharmacist deceitfully administered some drugs to Miss Janet which led to her miscarriage on February 18. "The pharmacist administered some drugs to her on the pretence that it would make her sleep," Mr. Akogwu said.

The police prosecutor informed the court that Onah had since been on admission at the National Hospital, Abuja, due to the effect of the drugs.

He told the court that the offence contravened sections 79 and 232 of the Penal Code.

On his part, Idris pleaded not guilty. He admitted that he took Miss Janet to a pharmacist but added that it was done with her consent.

"She was the person who begged me to take her to the pharmacist to get some drugs that would abort the pregnancy because she is a student and did not want the pregnancy to hinder her studies," he argued.

Following his plea, the chief magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties in like sum. He then adjourned the case to March 26 for hearing.

Bomb scare rocks Seme border, As Boko Haram causes panic in Cameroun

Pandemonium broke out yesterday at the Seme border area of Badagry, Lagos State, when an item suspected to be a bomb was discovered in a black nylon at a bus station close to the immigration point.

The item was found at about 4.00am by a police inspector.

Those, who were around at the time of the discovery took to their heels for fear that they might likely be blown up by the suspected explosive device.

Following the alarm that was raised, police bomb disposal officer in charge of Seme border, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Humphrey Ogedengbe was alerted by the police inspector.

Police preliminary examination revealed that the items contained in the bag were a wall clock with two batteries, and positive and negative wires, attached to it as well as iron suspected to be fuel pump unrapped to look like a bomb.

Daily Sun learnt that the police bomb unit would hold a major meeting with all the security agencies, including Customs, Immigration, State Security Service and the police operating at the border.

It was gathered that some early morning travellers to and from Republic of Benin abandoned their vehicles and goods, and scampered for safety when the news of suspected bomb was broken.

Also, residents of the area took to their heels when the news reached them while passengers in nearby motor parks shelved their trip.

However, the Commissioner of Police in charge of Anti-Bomb Unit, Ambrose Aisabor, described the discovery as a hoax by mischief-makers who did not want peace in the country.

Aisabor said the object found in a black polythene bag was made up of a wall clock, batteries and some wires designed to look as explosive device.

He said his men tested the object only to find out that it was a hoax designed by mischief-makers to cause unnecessary panic.

He advised members of the public to go about their normal businesses as the force was on the ground and would rise to any eventuality.

Meanwhile, Islamist religious extremists, Boko Haram sect has spread its tentacles to Cameroun, Nigeria’s neighbour to the east, giving rise to panic among the populace.

According to a Cameroun-based religious journal, Ecumenical News International, ENInews religious authorities in the country had warned their people against accepting the teachings of Boko Haram that was responsible for killing of about 450 people in Nigeria in 2011.

In the latest incident, four policemen were shot dead on February 23 in the northern Nigerian towns of Kano and Minna, where the people were now gripped by fear of incessant attacks by the violent group.

The President of the Cameroun Association of Imams, Sheik Ibrahim Mbombo Mubarak said he was concerned that some Moslem leaders had welcomed the ‘hate doctrine’ and had allowed Boko Haram faithful to preach in their mosques.

“The number-one and number-three strongmen of the sect, Mohamed Nour and Mohamed Kahirou are from Cameroun … So they came back when they were chased from Nigeria and have been spreading their recorded messages and ideology,” he said during a meeting with administrative authorities in Douala, Cameroun’s commercial centre. He said he believes regulation of religious groups might be an answer.

“Religions are practiced without any authorization and that’s how these extremist movements are gaining ground in Cameroun,” Mubarak said.

Regulating the sector would have made it difficult for such hate groups to establish themselves in a country that prides itself on maintaining long periods of peace, he explained. Camerounian state radio reported that the Lamido of Garoua, a Moslem leader, exhorted the faithful to “stick to the basics of Islam … We understand our Islam and we don’t heed those who think they understand this religion better than us.”

In a similar warning note, the Archbishop of Douala, Msgr. Samuel Kleda, said during an ecumenical service for peace in Cameroun that the Boko Haram doctrine is “anti-social … it is against the abiding love of our saviour,” according to a local weekly newspaper, Timescape Journal.

Camerounian scholar Gilbert L. Taguem Fah, writing in a recent book about new Islamic dynamics in the country, said that there is a danger Boko Haram could spread its “extremist, intolerant and violent ideology” to cities as far south as Douala, which he said is an important centre of Islamic expansion.

Political leaders have said they are concerned that poverty in Cameroun, where 40 per cent of the population lives on less than one dollar per day, could make Boko Haram attractive to many people, especially in the north.

A visit to Lagdo, in Cameroun’s far north, revealed that villagers have seen people with long beads and red or black headscarves (outfits that Boko Haram followers wear), in the area.

“They came here and told me that all our problems are caused by Western education and Western ideas,” a resident of Lagdo, Oumarou Djam, told ENInews, casting a furtive glance around.

“They also said they will give me a lot of money if I joined their group. They looked dangerous, so I lied that I would consider their proposal. I am afraid that they may come again,” he said.

A middle aged-woman identified as Biodun Bamgbose, was yesterday paraded alongside ten other robbery suspects by the Ogun State Police Command for alleged armed robbery and cars snatching, among other crimes.

Briefing newsmen at the Command’s Headquarters, in Abeokuta, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the woman was a member of a six-man syndicate that specialised in car snatching in the state.

According to Adejobi, before Bamgbose met her waterloo, “the lady, Biodun Bamgboye, will first make friend with a man who rides big cars. So, one day when she goes out with him, she will call her accomplice to come and snatch the car. The gang has been doing this for a while now, terrorizing innocent citizens and dispossessing them of their belongings, we fought tooth and nail before these criminals were eventually arrested.”

He said that all the suspects were arrested for robbery and cars snatching among other crimes in the state.

He attributed the arrest of the suspects to combined efforts of the Police and various communities.

28 Years Old Nigerian Dies During Alcohol Drinking Contest

Nigerians who patronize drinking joints and beer parlours have been warned by the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force against engaging in life-threatening contests.

This warning followed the death of Azeez Muideen, a 28-year-old commercial motorcyclist (Okada rider), last Wednesday after taking too much alcohol in a bid to win a drinking competition.

It was learnt that on the day of the incident, Azeez and some friends had a drinking contest. He took excess alcohol after which he suddenly slumped.

According to residents of Aso Rock Villa, Ebute Road, along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where the incident occurred, Azeez alone consumed two bottles of brandy before the unfortunate incident. Nigeria repatriates 11,000 foreigners

Nigeria has repatriated around 11,000 foreigners mainly from Niger and Chad over the past six months to curb a growing Islamist insurgency, the immigration services said on Monday.

“The latest number of foreigners repatriated as at this morning is 11,000,” immigration services spokesman Joachim Olumba told AFP, updating an earlier figure.

“The bulk of them are from Niger and Chad.”

The extremist Islamist sect Boko Haram blamed for dozens of attacks in Nigeria that have claimed hundreds of lives, is thought to draw some of its members from neighbouring countries.

Olumba said the repatriation “has been intensified in the past six months following the Boko Haram insurgency,” adding: “We have an obligation to rid the country of undesirable elements.”

He said immigration officers last week caught 120 people trying to enter illegally from Niger “and we quickly sent them back to their country”.

Boko Haram’s deadly gun and bomb attacks have shaken Africa’s most populous country which is divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominantly Christian south.

Its base is in northeast Nigeria which borders Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Violence blamed on Boko Haram, whose specific aims remain largely unclear, has since 2009 claimed more than 1,000 lives, including over 300 this year alone, according to a tally by AFP and activists.

The sect has previously said it wants to create an Islamic state in Nigeria’s deeply impoverished north.

Nigeria’s military authorities last week said Boko Haram has ties with Al-Qaeda in the Maghreb (AQIM).

Why we’re yet to contain Boko Haram –DG SSS

Tackling insecurity including the incessant attacks by Boko Haram has been difficult due to ethnic and religious sentiments attached to most of the crisis, the Director General of the State Security Services (SSS), Mr. Ita Ekpeyong, has said.

He spoke at the weekend in Abuja on “The role of Imams in the current security challenges in Nigeria,’ at the sixth seminar organized by the Committee of FCT Imams (CFI).

Ekpeyong said “Although many violent conflicts have erupted ostensibly in the name of religion, what has largely been ignored is the fact that religious approaches to peace-making which include the expanded role of religious leaders and religious institutions in peace-making and peace building have been particularly effective in complementing secular peace diplomacy.

“It should be noted also that crisis situations where religion is invoked, either in its own right or as a proxy for political battles, arise not simply between adherents of different religious practices and beliefs, but also between different sects of a particular religion. It is therefore essential to include religious actors in effort to bring about mutual understanding towards the mitigation or reconciliation of conflict.”

He wondered how the Boko Haram leaders were able to recruit and indoctrinate their members within a short time that some members are willing to embark on suicide bomb attacks, adding that between the 1980s Maitatsine riots and the latest Boko Haram attacks there have been over 20 religious crises in the country.

He therefore urged the Imams to inculcate genuine Islamic knowledge and values especially among young Muslims to enable them differentiate between the right and wrong ideologies.

VICTORIA AND THE NIGHTMARE OF AKWA IBOM WITCH CHILDREN

My heart bleeds as I read the story of Victoria. How her own parents subjected her to midnight torture; when everywhere has been calmed, waking her up at night and burning her with candle to extract confession. This time not Victoria Climbe, but Victoria Akwa-Ibom. We reject our own for others to pick and make good use of as if our own ignorance is incurable. The story of Akwa Ibom Child Witch Story is an endless one of the levity with which the government subjected it to.

In Akwa Ibom State, it is very terrible situation while our government tries a lot to make a window dressing as if nothing bad is going on; and the very the church that causes this whole problem is trying to blame humanists and atheist groups for the very problem that they initiated in 1999, brainwashing people with films such as "END OF THE WICKED," "ESCAPE ROOT" and "The COVEN" And books like ''The Seat of Satan Exposed'' ''UNVEILING THE MYSTERY OF WITCHCRAFT'' written by Apostle Helen Ukpabio. The latter states, in part: “If a child under the age of two screams in the night, cries and is always feverish with deteriorating health he or she is a servant of Satan.” This is however a common phenomenon in the rustic Nigerian communities where malaria epidemic is nothing to write home about and given the avalanche of mosquitoes from pot holes, stench-emitting blocked gullies and garbage heaps

Years back, we witnessed how aged people were accused of witchcraft, causing unheard-of atrocity were abused, neglected or killed openly, (Remember Akpan Ekwong who led the killings of people in the early eighties?); no child was ever accused of being a witch. But after such films, music and pulpit theology laced with fear of witchcraft and how children have taken over the witch world, the fate of Akwa Ibom child changed for the worst. In every 2 children accused of witchcraft in Nigeria 1 is from Akwa Ibom. Outside Nigeria, in every 4 children accused of witchcraft, 1 is from Akwa Ibom State. But we continue to downplay on the magnitude of this problem and castigate those who dare to work or campaign to reverse this ugly and dangerous trend. Thank God that this very story is not written by an Akwa Ibom person otherwise they would have referred it to blackmailing Akwa Ibom State government at the detriment of child

As I write this piece, inside my mind, I frown at Aniekan Umanah, the present Akwa Ibom State Information Commissioner, for lying to the world that no child has ever being harmed or hurt on account of witchcraft while children continue to face death penalty in churches and their family homes. As we walk the streets daily we see more and more children on the Street because the misinforming, sorry LIAR Commissioner of Orientation and Information has disoriented the people and not help to enlighten his society. I frown at him for not educating the people about the wicked brainwash of these vile and renegade churches.

Some journalists who had reported about the true child witch story to expose the atrocity of these churches and the parents, have been paid by Aniekan Umanah and the Liberty Gospel Church to write a reverse story. With time, I believe we will work with some human right lawyers to face his paid journalists for the monumental deceit. All is not yet Uhuru for them. Let them get paid and tell lies about the fate of children of Akwa Ibom origin. But I must strongly commend some of the journalists and right groups who stood their ground and refused to be paid with blood money to sacrifice our children. Those who see the truth and tell it the way it is; those who have refused to be bought to tell lies. I condemn in the strongest possible terms the News Watch magazine and The News for misleading the public with their paid job to belch cannon of lies about the right groups that work to rescue and protect these vulnerable children. Those who are here knows the truth and cannot be deceived

As I write now, one child is facing jungle justice out there for no crime he or she has committed. Her only crime is that she was born to an Akwa Ibom person, or perhaps in a poor family. The Akwa Ibom Child Fate is that of witch branding, stigmatisation, torture, abandonment, suffocation, trafficking, rituals and DEATH. The government has not done anything to enlighten the folk and religious groups on the superstitious belief of child witchcraft simply because most government officials believe that those children deserve such fate since they are guilty as charged. They pay much attention to buy the media to tell the world that those who campaign for stoppage of child stigmatization; torture and killing are doing so for pecuniary reason without offering an alternative.

Thank goodness, the federal government of Nigeria through Dr Idris Kuta, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development recently issued a statement acknowledging child witch palaver and made a strong condemnation on those stigmatised and torture children in the name of witchcraft.

I just read in media how the governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio is working with the state House of Assembly to gag the media with headlines such as “Gov Akpabio’s Akwa Ibom Assembly arrogating Power to Itself to Gag Journalists." “Akwa Ibom Govt moves to gag media over critical reporting of Governor Akpabio”

While I am yet to come to term with this, I will no doubt encourage government to pay attention to the myriads of problem that bedevilled the fate of stigmatised children and do more to curb the menace instead of wasting time establishing repulsive laws that will attract more criticism and cynicism. I agree that the law has been passed since 2008, but how many pastors or parents have been prosecuted. Not a single one! Rather we eulogise them and expect every body to do same. Unfortunate! Apart from the mere arrest and bail-out no one has ever face prosecution. Those who report such pastors to the government or its agency, risk being gunned after, blackmailed, even by same government agents with tacit support from the executive government. Akpabio and his government agents have been very infamous in launching vicious and calumnious attack on the right groups backed up by organisation such as Liberty Gospel Church that invented the child witch imbroglio and indeed phenomenon in Nigeria.

The Story of Victoria from Akwa Ibom State whose parents work in INEC and live in Karu, Abuja tells you that Akwa Ibom Child is not save any where in the world with brainwash launch by the Christian fanatical groups and government inaction or lack of intervention. Victoria's story reminds me of the Good Samaritan who wasn’t a Christian but stopped to rescue the dying Christ. Barrister Aja N. Aja who rescued Victoria is not from Akwa Ibom and may not be a Christian but dovetailed to help Victoria who is an Akwa Ibom Child.

Apart from the Child’s Right and Rehabilitation Network (CRARN) whose, founder (Sam Itauma) and members are Christians all other right groups that are today campaigning for the end to Child stigmatisation are not Christian by inclination or concept but they work tirelessly to save the lives of children who are manacled in churches and starved to death in the name of exorcism and the streets. So what the fusses about atheist and humanist groups when Christian groups have failed us? What the fuss when churches have failed us; when pastors, evangelist, Apostles, Bishop, Prophets have failed us?

I recently attended the attended a UNICEF advocacy meeting here in Akwa Ibom, where a government representative stood up and argued that some of the accused children might be witches. If a government official made such remarks in a high profile advocacy meeting like that, what does one expect how such children will be treated by the an ordinary person?

Such helpless children continue to dot the streets, taking refuge in abandoned structures and becoming prey to human traffickers and ritual killers. What could have happed to all these children if these groups did not step up campaigns to protect them? Reporting such abuse, torture or killing of children on the media is seen as fighting the government. The Akwa Ibom government continues to flaunt its bloated ego sweeping such cruelty on children under the carpet with the archaic cliché “Akwa Ibom Ado Ok”. Meaning Akwa Ibom is Ok! And now, it is “the Uncommon Transformation!” But whatever transformation that may have set in, while the human trafficking business in Nigeria or Africa continues to boom because the syndicates know Akwa Ibom State is a repository of abandoned children only compared to Nepal as a whole, makes such transformation a lip-service.

Truly if the Channel News TV that aired Victoria’s story was in Akwa Ibom, it would not have gone unscathed. The TV anchorman would have been under crucible investigation now by the government security agents. No doubt Governor Akpabio is working round the clock to gag the press using the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly as a puppet, defying the Freedom of Information (FOI) bill that was passed into law by the federal government of Nigeria.

While appreciating the fact that state government had enacted the child protection law, I bemoan bitterly as the implementation still remains a mirage. How many of these pastors or parent have so far been prosecuted, apart from the arrest and bail? One strong question that refuses to depart the lips of many is: What would have happened to the thousands of children stigmatised children if the civil society and right groups had taking to sitting on the fence? Clearly, with about 50 thousands churches in Nigeria, only one church is leading a campaign against witch hunting; with zero tolerance to witchcraft belief. This is Solid Rock Kingdom Church with Apostle John Okoriko. Can other churches and pastors borrow a leaf here?

To this end, I wish to dole out my Diadem of Honour to the right groups and civil society organizations with the following acronyms for working hard to save the witch children of Nigeria: CRARN, UNICEF, NAPTIP, SSN, YHN, CEHRD NHM and indeed the initiator of Anti Child Witch-Hunt Campaign Mr. Sam Itauma for donating time, resources and love for the ostracized children right to life.

Peters writes from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State
