Girl Tells Her Pathetic Story After Escaping From Ritualists

A first year student of Health Technology at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Miss Grace Ayetan (20), at the weekend narrated her ordeal with ritualists to The Nation in Benin, the Edo State capital.

Grace, who was accompanied by her father, Mr. James Ayetan said: “I boarded a bus from Ring-Road to school and there were other passengers in the vehicle. At Five Junction, the bus stopped and the conductor went down to pour water into the radiator. That is the last thing I remembered. We all fell asleep.

“When another passenger, a woman, woke us up later, the bus was in the bush. “We started shouting, but the driver and the conductor brought out a gun and told us to be quiet. “They took us to an underground house in the forest and put us into different rooms. They chained us and hung our bags around our necks. We went without food and water for days. “After beheading a woman and her baby, a fight ensued between the ritualists over what to do with the rest of us. In the process, a bunch of keys fell from one of them.

“The fight drew the attention of the guards at the main entrance who took the parties into a room to settle the dispute. “That gave one of us the opportunity to pick the keys and unlock the chains. That was how we escaped.”

Grace said a good Samaritan took them out of the forest and brought them to Benin. She advised the public to be careful when boarding commercial vehicles. Mr. Ayetan urged security agents to curb the activities of ritualists.

This could be an eye opener to whom it may concern, please learn to be more careful...

Pastor Caught Trying To Use Mum For Money Rituals

Residents of Agboku, a community in the Ado -Odo Local Government area of Ogun State were thrown into confusion and pandemonium on Thursday, 13th April , when news filtered out about the kidnap of a 70- year-old-woman, madam Aduke Karimu Sawo. The kidnappers were believed to be money ritualists. But what alarmed people of Agboku was that they were allegedly sent by Pastor Rafiu Sawo, the biological son of the woman.

Born a Muslim 35 years ago, Rafiu Sawo is now a Christian and was the founder of Celestial Church of Christ, [Oke itura Parish,] Owode, Ogun state, which he shepherds. The old woman was reportedly kidnapped and taken far away on a chartered motorcycle popularly called Okada to a thick forest, near Ayede village where her throat was slashed with knife. Taken for dead, she was then covered with raffia leaves and dumped by the bush path. Her assailants thereafter took leave of 'the corpse' to put a call across to Pastor Sawo to come over and sever the head as required for the money ritual .

Unknown to them, Madam Aduke was still alive and she escaped to safely before they came for her.Recounting her ordeals and narrow escape , she told our reporter in a private clinic at Ado Odo, where she is still recuperating, that it was God that saved her.Telling her strange-but-true story, she said: "My name is Aduke, my husband's name is Sawo, now late. I am about seventy years old. I have five children, namely, Wahab, Silifat, Iyabode, Rashidat, and the one in question now is Rafiu.

Since my husband passed on, I have been charged with the responsibility of sending then to school and looking after their welfare.I suffered untold hardships and did all kinds of odd jobs to take care of myself and the children before old ages started catching up with me."Madam Aduke, who looked frail on the hospital stretcher stated further that, "some times I fetched water from the Ado-Odo streams to houses for a token in order to make ends meet. Also, I sold different herbs cut in the bush.

My other children are contend with this simple life and they assist me in my old age, Rafiu, who is the fourth in the family has always been the black sheep among them all. Like the prodigal son, Rafiu ran away to Ajangbadi, in the outskirts of Lagos where he stayed for close to three years, in the company of some friends of questionable character. I warned him to avoid the company of all bad friends to no avail.""Last week, we were planning for a burial ceremony. I was here in Ado-Odo with one of my daughters who had just fiven birth to a set of twins. Rafiu came ere in the company of some of his friends.

He tola me that they were planning to offer a sacrifice to appease the gods of the land in Agboku to avoid the untimely death of my children.I did not know that he had planned with his friends to kill me for money making ritual. He had already instructed the Okada man to drive me to the specific area where I would be killed. He rode hurriedly and dangerously. Along Agboku bush, I was told to say my last prayer.

I was further told that that was going to be my last day on earth. The Okada man said he had instruction to cut off my head to better the financial condition of my son, Rafiu and others. And before I could say anything, he had pushed me down from the bike, drawn up a sharp dagger and slashed my throat. Because he was in a hurry he slashed it half way. I lay face down on the floor and pretended that I had died as blood gushed out of my neck.He started making desperate calls to Rafiu to come and cut off my head.

When I saw that he had left to pick Rafiu, I managed to stand up and staggered away to the nearby village where I begged some people to save my life. They brought me here where I am presently receiving treatment."Speaking with the Nigeria Compass on Saturday, the Nurse in charge of the clinic said, "Initially I was reluctant to admit the woman because of the problems of these Egun speaking people around here. I changed my mmd later because of her condition and the need to assist a fellow being.

She is presently on antibiotics and she is responding well to treatment. The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Divisional Police Station Ado-Odo, one Mr. Adesina confirmed that the case was reported at the division but told our reporter that the information about the whereabouts of the suspect was still sketchy while investigations were still on going. In a related development, Mr. Shakirudeen Liasu, 42, a palm kernel dealer, also narrated how he was kidnapped by another group on February 21st- *""' at Igemu village.

Ishan], and Muyideen [aka Sayee] accosted me inside the bush and demanded for the union Identification Cards. Muyideen specifically accused me that I am strong headed because I did not register as a member with the Palm Kernel Association in Ado Odo. I was told that the day I was kidnapped would be my last day on earth.

They started hitting me with iron rod. I told them that I did not need to register under any association to go about my business, since I had registered with the Ministry of Trade and Commerce, Abeokuta since 2008 and I have a Certificate of Registration to show for it. I argued in vain, that I did not have to be under another local association."Liasu speaking further on his experience said, "Later, they carried me on top of a Bajaj motor cycle to a thick bush at Idolehin village". Liasu is pointing accusing finger one Adebisi Ajiboye as the mastermind of the kidnap.

16-year-old Girl Abducted for Rituals in Ekiti by Traditional Chief

A 16-year-old girl (name withheld) from Kogi State has been abducted and forced into marriage in Orun-Ekiti, Ekiti State, by a traditional chief to mark his chieftaincy installation rite. She was allegedly taken away from her parents under the pretense that the traditional ruler of the Orun-Ekiti wanted to see her.

The girl, now in the custody of the Ekiti State Ministry of Women Affairs and Gender Empowerment, was said to have been kept secretly for seven days by the chief before the state government came to her rescue. Ekiti State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Gender Empowerment, Mrs Fola Richie-Adewusi said the action was against the state Laws on Gender Violence Prohibition and Child Right.

The chief, who allegedly abducted the girl, allegedly approached the parents with a horse tail believed to be an authority from the monarch of Orun-Ekiti, saying the girl was needed in the palace. Speaking on the issue, the Women Commissioner disclosed that the alleged chief only wanted to use his little wealth to oppress the poor and forcefully marry the little girl without the parents’ consent.

The chief, according to the commissioner, has been arrested but released on bail while the government has started the process of legal action against him. When we met the Oloja of Orun-Ekiti, Oba Osalusi Oluwasola, explained that the chief came to him that he has gotten an “Abokoaye” (a young girl that a man who is a about to get chieftaincy title must have before the rites could be completed) and that the monarch should give him an authority to bring the girl to the palace.

He explained that he did not know the agreement between the man and the girl’s parents, saying he believed that the man should have consulted the parents and done all the necessary things for the parents to give him their daughter.

The Oloja maintained that it was custom in their community as he did similar thing when he was about to be made a High Chief as Oloja in the 1970s. According to the monarch, it was his family member who helped him look for his “Abokoaaye” whom he said was an under-aged girl then but emphasized that he sent the girl back to her parents after all the rites had been done and exercised patience until three years when the girl was matured enough to be married before he brought her home as new wife.

He appealed to the government for understanding, saying it was their custom and if it was contrary to the law of Ekiti State now then such a thing would not happen again and that the chief should go and do all he could to appeal to the parents of the girl, and if needed he should wait for the age the law specified. All efforts to reach the chief on phone failed and the monarch said he had travelled down to Ado-Ekiti and that he did not know when he would be back.

Woman Sacrifices Her Only Daughter to River Goddess Awube for More Children

Idenyi Abbah, a middle aged woman residing at Anumajogwu, in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State has confessed to killing her 8-year-old daughter, Enyanwu, because she wanted more children.

Currently held at the Ukwo Police Station in Benue State, Abbah, who had one child for her husband, said she became envious when he married a second wife in a quest for more children. She then consulted a juju priest at Ikem in Anambra State, who allegedly asked her to sacrifice her only daughter to the Awube goddess.

“I have been to every part of the country, searching for pastors and native doctors that could help me out of this problem, but have been told almost the same story, that my only daughter was ‘ogbanje’ (witch) and had blocked my womb,” she said. “I had tried to avoid the solution I got from one native doctor at Ikem; until my husband opted for another wife. This move had forced me to do the wish of the gods by killing Enyanwu.”

At the venue of the sacrifice, near the Awube River, around midnight, the said juju priest allegedly arranged for some young men who gang-raped Enyanwu before sacrificing her to the said goddess, while her mother watched.

A resident of the area, who gave his name as Okpe, claimed to have witnessed the murder from a hideout while he was hunting at night; adding that he was powerless to stop the killing because the young men were armed. “They put their knives through her neck after the mother had said some incantation,” he said. “They also raped her before that.”

Okpe said he fled the scene and reported the matter to the village head, who then alerted the police. When police officers and residents of the community stormed the scene of the murder, nobody was found and a search revealed Enyanwu’s mutilated corpse in a shallow grave near the river.

Police authorities in the state say a manhunt has been launched for the murderers and that Abbah will soon be charged to court.

A sordid story of man’s inhumanity to man was told yesterday in Minna as a two-year-old girl was beheaded and vital parts of her body taken by suspected ritualists in an uncompleted building at Kafin Tela/Tunga area of the state capital.

NEWSMEN findings revealed that Ummul-Khairu Muhammad was beheaded in the building which was a few metres away from her family house where children normally gather to play.

The people of the area were taken aback yesterday afternoon when they went into the building to find the body of the baby that left home about 10am and whose parents thought was with one of her peers dead.

The mother, Malama Fati Muhammad, who is 22 years old, said that the late baby was her first child , that she had already prepared her to go for Quranic school that morning only to find the body later dumped in the uncompleted building after she finished house chores and was looking for her.

Fati, known as Maman Ummi by neighbours, said that she normally went everywhere with her daughter but the daughter had soaked her clothes in water and she decided to change them and, before she could put her another dress, the little girl sneaked out to her usual playing ground before she was found beheaded.

When contacted, the Niger State police public relations officer, ASP Richard Oguche, confirmed the incident.

He said the police had promptly mobilised its men for adequate intelligence operation with the aim of arresting the perpetrators of the inhuman act.

Two Men defile 18-month-old baby for Money Ritual

The two assailants appeared before a Guruve magistrate charged with rape. One of the men told the court that a traditional healer had advised him to use the blood from the baby’s private parts when cooking so that people would continue to patronise his restaurant.

Jokonya (30) and Masango (26) appeared before Guruve magistrate Mr Silas Chitongo, who remanded them in custody to today.

The state led by prosecutor Mr Courage alleged that on Christmas Day last year at around 10pm, Jokonya and Masango entered the kitchen hut where the victim was sleeping with her mother.

Masango allegedly approached the mother of the baby girl and grabbed her by the leg as she slept.

The woman managed to free herself and fled towards the village head’s homestead.

Masango allegedly gave chase while Jokonya remained behind in the kitchen hut where the complainant was sleeping.

When he failed to catch the woman, Masango returned where he had left Jokonya.

The village head teamed up with other villagers and accompanied the mother of the victim back to her house where they found the two and the baby gone.

Jokonya reportedly raped the minor while Masango watched.

The two then left the baby in a nearby bush and went away leaving her crying.

The following day the mother picked up a cellphone belonging to Masango near her house leading to his arrest. Masango then implicated Jokonya who was also arrested.

Later that day the mother heard her daughter crying in the bush and discovered that she was raped. The child was rushed to St Albert’s Mission Hospital for medical examination.

Masango told the court that he had assisted Jokonya to rape the baby because he had promised to give him two cattle.

Jokonya said a traditional healer had advised him to use the blood from the private parts when preparing food so that people would continue to come and buy at his restaurant.

Relatives of a 56-year-old man in Bauchi State whose eyes were plucked by suspected ritualists in Bonjiji village have appealed to the inspector general of police to fish out the people who carried out the dastardly act.

The victim, Malam Umar Bojinji, who is currently receiving treatment at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi fell into the hands of the evil men who removed his eyes and teeth.

Bojinji was attacked at Bojinji village in a bush where he was cutting woods in Bauchi Local Government Area near Inkil, a suburb of the state capital.

The victim’s younger brother, Yakubu Abdullahi, lamented the insecurity in the area, saying it was a source of concern to them and called on the authorities to do something about it.

He said some strangers came to greet his brother who had two wives and 13 children while he was cutting woods and waited for him; adding that while he was being assisted to lift the woods on his head, the strangers started to hit him with a cutlass and thereafter tied him down.

Man Arrested For Allegedly Turning A Boy Into Goat

justify;">The Mile One Divisional Police Headquarters in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, was today besieged by an angry mob who attempted to lynch a man for allegedly turning a boy into a goat.

According to an eyewitness, trouble started when somebody raised an alarm that he observed that the middle-age man was speaking to a goat and after that the goat started running after him.

Soon after that, an angry mob started milling around the man and the mysterious “goat”, alleging that the goat was a boy.

The mob insisted that he should change the goat back into a human being.

Mr.Tony Adeyi, a Superintendent of Police(SP)and Divisional Police Officer of Mile One confirmed that a suspect was rescued from a mob which wanted to lynch him over an allegation that cannot be substantiated.

“It is a mere rumour that could not be substantiated in law. We don’t act on rumour. We have transferred the man to State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, for further investigation,” he said.

At the time of filing in this report, the Mile One Police station was cordoned off to prevent the angry mob from forcefully gaining entry into the station.

Ben Ugwuegbulem, the spokesman for the Rivers State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the suspect but dismissed the allegation as mere rumour that does not hold any water.

I prepared charms for govs, prominent persons, herbalist confesses

THE trial of six persons charged with kidnapping and murder, yesterday, at an Ogidi Magistrate Court in Idemili local government area of Anambra State, took a dramatic twist as one of the suspects, a native doctor, denied preparing charms for criminals but governors and other prominent people in the society.

The suspect, Chukwunonso Okerulu, even boasted that he had bought many cars and built houses from proceeds earned working for governors.

He said: “Our people even gave me chieftaincy title when they found out after administering native oath on me that my hands are clean.

“I am a native doctor, a trade which I have practiced for more than 20 years and I have many cars and big buildings all over the places, even governors visit my shrine,” the suspect told the court.

Pandemonium had earlier trailed trial of the six suspects as villagers stormed the court premises to hear the case, causing anxiety and stampede.

As early as 8.30 am, residents of the community had thronged the court to hear the matter in connection with the murder of two security guards and kidnapping of one, Dr. Reuben Okwosa in December last year.

The atmosphere became tensed when the accused persons were called to the dock by the court clerk and the 8-count charge read to them.

The six persons standing trial over murder of two security guards attached to KP Pharmaceutical at Ogidi, Idemili North local government area, as well as kidnap of Dr. Reuben Okwosa, had allegedly collected N5.5 million ransom.

Those arraigned were Emmanuel Caesar Nwabunne ‘m’ 32, Edward Nwoye ‘m’ 50, Ifeanyi Nwafor, ‘M’ 48 years, Chukwunonso Okerulu, ‘m’ 37 Anthony Aghaonu, ‘m’ 41 and Vincent Aghanou, ‘m’ 25 years who were being accused of masterminding the murder and kidnap of the medical doctor.

The accused persons were also standing trial for murder of one Godwin Mendu who was a security guard at KP Pharmaceuticals, when they allegedly struck at an end of year party being organised for the chairman of the company, Dr. Reuben Okwosa, who was kidnapped in the process.

One of the lawyers to the accused persons, Mr. Peremine Oseme, who appeared for the 1st, 5th and 6th accused persons, said his clients were merely arraigned by the prosecutors on mere suspicion.

Oseme noted that since his clients were not seen at the scene of the crime but arrested while drinking at a beer palour for allegedly waving at the Sports Utility Vehicle, SUV, that was used by the kidnappers to kidnap the victim, it was a mere suspicion.

Miss. Genevieve Nwosu who appeared for the 4th accused, said the prosecutors had not been able to establish their case, adding that “to arrest my client because they waved at a moving vehicle was laughable”

However, the prosecuting counsel , Mr. Ebitemu Orifu, said the suspects were arrested in connection with the crime, adding that there was enough evidence to prosecute them.

The presiding Magistrate, Phil Ebosia, said the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter and ordered that the accused persons be remanded in prison custody.

He also directed the prosecuting counsel to collect all certified copies of relevant documents for onward presentation to the state Attorney General.

While the accused were being taken away by armed policemen, there was anguish and wailing from mainly women who said the suspects were innocent of the crime.

Niger police nab man in possession of baby’s head

The renewed efforts of the Niger State police command to rid the state of criminal elements may have started yielding results, following the discovery of a severed head of a few months old baby girl in a polythene in possession of a young man suspected to be one of the arrow-heads of a syndicate that specialises in using human parts for ritual purposes in parts of the state.

The discovery of the strange object with the suspect (names withheld) occurred early last week, during a stop and search duty by a team of policemen on the highway at Erena, in Shiroro Local Government area of the state .

The NEWSMEN further learnt that trouble began for the young man, when he was allegedly sighted by a policeman, holding a wet Bagco Super sack and attempting to board a commercial vehicle from the village (Erena) with the bag allegedly containing the fresh human head.

It was further gathered that, as the suspect was about to board the vehicle, the policeman allegedly observed that a liquid substance which was a mixture of blood and water was said to have been oozing from the bag.

A police source at the homicide section of the state Criminal Investigation Department(CID), Minna, the state capital, informed the Nigerian Tribune that, as a result of that, the policeman became suspicious and requested to know the content of the bag.

The source who craved for anonymity in a chat with the NT stated that the suspect allegedly told the Policeman that the bag contained some pieces of fresh Tomatoes , just as the policeman insisted that he must be allowed
to see whether it was “Tomatoes” or not.

“It was however at the point of a very serious struggle between the suspect and the policeman, that some concerned on lookers who were either passing by of attempting to board commercial vehicles near the scene who assisted the policeman in apprehending the suspect. And when they forced the bag opened, they now saw the head of human being concealed in the sack” the source stated

NT was further informed that no sooner that the strange object was discovered with the suspect that an irate mob gathered with the view to beating him into a pulp, but that the policeman was allegedly able to maneuver him to the nearby police outpost in the village where he was kept in the police cell as he was said to have confessed to the crime during investigation by the police.

“He now confessed that another person gave him the head and at the point of the police trying to track down the person he also escaped from the police’s cell that fateful night , while the police went to look for the person whom he said gave him the head . But after apprehending the man, fortunately for the police, the following morning, he was re-arrested and the two of them have been transferred to the state CID for further investigation” said the source.

Meanwhile, the Spokesman of the state Police Command, Mr. Richard Adamu Oguche has confirmed the incident in a brief interview with the NT in his office at the Command’s headquarters, Minna, adding that the two suspected ritulists have allegedly confessed to the crime, just as they had promised to take the police to the hideout of the remaining members of the gang.

“In fact we deliberately decided to keep their names as top secret pending the arrest of the remaining members of the gang, so that it will not jeopardize police’s further investigation of the case if the names of the two suspects in our custodies were allowed to be mentioned in the media” said Oguche, an ASP.

The suspects, according to report, had lured the hunchback man telling him that they had wooed a lady on his behalf and that he should accompany them to visit her.

The men had acted on the instruction from their herbalist who said they should look for a hunchback person and remove his hunchback and bring it for money ritual. The unsuspecting deceased had followed the young men from Ago-Alaye, a village near Araromi-Obu town in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State to a forest near Oniparaga where he was murdered and his assailants later severed his chest and back and removed the hunch

The deceased’s father, Oladapo Dowo, said when he did not see his son, Adeoye, he reported the matter to the police at Ararom-Obu Police Station. In the course of police investigation, one of the suspects was arrested.

The suspect later confessed that Adeoye had been killed for money ritual. The suspect said two of his friends, now at large, had escaped with the hunch removed from Adeoye chest and back, adding that it was the herbalist who asked them to look for hunchback person when his gang contacted him for money ritual. However, the herbalist denied the allegation.

Briefing newsmen at the weekend, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sani Magaji, said the suspects were arrested following a report lodged at Araromi-Obu Police Station by the deceased’s father that his son with hunchback was missing. According to him, the Ore Police Division subsequently took over the matter, which led to the arrest of the suspects. One of them, he said, later confessed that he was responsible for the kidnap and led the police to the scene inside a forest where the decomposing body of the deceased was found.

Thieves Raided Benin Hospital to Steal Babies For Rituals

Some thieves yesterday morning reportedly invaded the maternity wards of the central hospital in Benin, the capital of Edo State, attempting to steal newly born babies.

Many of the patients of the hospital, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent, appealed to the state government to provide adequate security in the hospital. One Mr. Bernard Isokponba said his wife who gave birth on Monday told him that the thieves stormed the female ward of the hospital in the midnight looking for placenta and babies.

Some of the staff of the hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the thieves could be agents of some politicians who have always used placenta, fetus and newly born babies for rituals.

The secretary of the hospital management committee, Isaac Isain, confirmed the incident, but denied that the invaders targeted newly born babies. “Thieves invaded the hospital and stole some handsets and cash from patients on admission.

Some suspects have been arrested and are now at the Adesuwa police station. This is not the first time thieves will enter the hospital”. He however said the management of the hospital had put measures in place to ensure adequate security in the hospital.

Woman Drags Husband To Court Over Money Making Rituals

Toyin Owoyomi, 33, has dragged her husband, Israel, to a Grade ‘B’ Customary Court, Oshodi, Lagos, seeking dissolution of their 14-year old marriage.

Owoyomi alleged at the court that her husband, after joining politics in 2007, tried to use her for money-making rituals.

“I cannot allow my husband to kill me because I want to live and take care of my children. Since my husband joined Ekiti State politics in 2007, he has become fetish; he visits herbalists and does strange things, like buying white dishes and clay pots.

“I lost my last pregnancy because my husband massaged my belly in pretence that he wanted to know how the unborn child was doing.

“Five minutes after that I had a miscarriage which almost cost me my life. I have been having terrible dreams and revelations that my husband is up to something“, she said.

Owoyomi urged the court to grant her the custody of the two children of the union, adding that she could not continue to remain married to her husband.

Isreal, 43, denied the allegations and pleaded that the marriage should not be dissolved. He admitted that when he had a spiritual attack, he only visited a church and not an herbalist.

The man did not run away immediately. He just went and hid somewhere. As I was shouting for help, one man came out but immediately I shouted again, he ran back. The man that hit me was wearing a black cloth and he is a young man. I saw some cars and cabs and I beckoned on them for help.
