Gunmen attack Maiduguri prison… set inmates free

AS the series of attacks continued unabated in Borno state, gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members attacked a prison office in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno state with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and petrol-bombs, setting all the unspecified number of inmates free, while one civilian was killed at about 6.30pm Thursday.

Thursday’s jail break makes it two attacks by the suspected gunmen after a Divisional Police Station and a second generation bank were attacked at Gwoza on March 4, 2013 at about 10pm.

Gwoza, a border town with Republic of Cameroon, is 135 kilometres southeast of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

According to an eyewitness and resident who does not want his name mentioned said, the gunmen took the police and other security agents unawares, when the gunmen came in with three vehicles, chanting, “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar” in Arabic Language, meaning God is great, God is great, before detonating IEDs and throwing of petrol-bombs at the prison building, located near the emir’s palace.

He said the gunmen did not meet any resistance from security agencies, as the prison building was set ablaze with explosives, setting all the inmates free.

Residents and passersby, he added, had to scamper for safety. According to him, “the attacks on and bombing of the prison building, lasted for only half an hour, before the gunmen fled to an unknown destination on the Gadamayo and Market roads of Gwoza town.

When contacted on phone for confirmation, the Police Commissioner, Yuguda Abdullahi’s line was answered by a strange voice, saying “the CP is having a meeting please call back”, but a top security agent who does not want his name mentioned confirmed the Jail break in Gwoza, pointing out that all the inmates were set free by the gunmen.
