According to reports from the BBC, nine Nigeria citizens have been sentenced to death in Kano for blasphemy. It was gathered that they were found guilty of insulting the Prophet Mohammed. According to Aminu Ibrahim, who is head of Kano's religious police, they pleaded guilty after been charged to court. Kano has a predominately Muslim population and Islamic courts operate alongside secular courts.It is not known if they will appeal the sentence. Many human rights organization have frowned against the sentencing to death of citizens for religious purposes and wants more lenient sentences for religious offences.
