Police Parades Nigerian Musician Turned Armed-robber

 Lagos state Police command yesterday paraded a 25 year old musician named John Sunday (pictured left) who says he took to armed robbery in order to gather N100,000 to promote his reggae album.

 “I am a musician from Ikofepepe in Akwa Ibom State. We were three in the gang, but one is on the run. I needed money to launch my album, Tureke Reggae; that is why I went into robbery. I was targeting N100,000" John said when he was interrogated.

 John  Onyekachi Oshomi (pictured right) who claimed to be a bus conductor said he joined the gang because he needed to take care of his family. The two were was arrested on November 21st.

 "I was a commercial bus conductor. We were operating on the Agege Total-Oshodi route. I just got married, but my wife is still in the village. I was looking for money to feed her whenever she comes to Lagos; that was why I went into armed robbery. ” Sunday confessed.

 According to The Nation, the Lagos state police commissioner said he got a tip off on November 21 at 10pm that some armed robbers were planning to rob in Lagos. He said he immediately directed the Officer-in-Charge, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Abba Kyari, a Superintendent of Police (SP), to go after them.

 “With two decoy teams, they stormed their hideout and arrested Onyekachi Oshomi and John Sunday with a revolver pistol. During interrogation, they confessed to the crime including snatching of several cars within the metropolis. Efforts have been stepped up to arrest those that are still at large,” Aderanti said.

Policeman goes on a shooting spree, K*lls one, Injures many

 Festac Police, yesterday, arrested a mobile policeman for indiscriminate shooting and k*lling of a barber, while inflicting injuries on four others at Amuwo-Odofin area of Lagos State.

When reporters visited the scene of the incident, sympathizers were seen in groups discussing the incident.

An eye witness who spoke on terms of anonymity, said he was lucky to have escaped unhurt by the policeman.

“I had retired for the night when I heard gun shots outside.

 I hurried out to know what was happening only to come face to face with an incident that nearly got me killed.

 I saw one of the mobile policemen attached to a house in Chief Sunny Ebere Close shooting all over the place and staggering in the process. We all ran for cover.

“I and one Emeka who resides here ran to the gate of one of the buildings close to  the gate of the hotel, but before we could enter, the policeman fired another shot, which hit Emeka on the leg.

“I fell down, pretending I was dead. That was actually what saved me, because when the policeman got to where I was, he left me and went after the other people.

 After he left, I got up and ran towards the estate gate. Surprisingly, Emeka got up and ran too.

“In the process of shooting indiscriminately, he went to a barber’s shop and asked  Bright, the barber, who was attending to a customer, to come out.

 Not suspecting anything serious, Bright obeyed after which the policeman shot him at close range.

“When the policeman saw that everyone was running for safety, he fired shots randomly, in the process a pregnant woman called Ebere was hit on the hand by bullet.

“Another victim, Nonso, was hit on his right eye and yet another victim simply called Tayo was hit on his thigh.”

It was gathered that when the policeman discovered the gravity of his action, he escaped through the Golden Tulip Hotel but was later arrested by the Festac Police.

 The deceased body has been deposited at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi-Araba morgue, while  three of the injured are receiving treatment at the hospital and the forth victim is being treated at a private hospital in Festac Town, Lagos.

Angry Mob beats policeman to d*ath for k*lling trader

The Lagos State Police Command has commenced investigations into the brutal k*lling of a police corporal, Ado Ayuba, who was lynched by some hoodlums in Suru Alaba area of the state.

 According to the police, the deceased officer was beaten to d*ath by an irate mob for allegedly k*lling a trader, Mustapha Mohammed, on July 30th, 2013.

 PUNCH Metro disclosed that Ayuba and another policeman were deployed to the scene to chase away traders who had illegally taken over a portion of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

 It was learnt that trading activities by the traders usually caused terrible road traffic in the area.

  Which some residents and motorists had complained to relevant authorities about the inconveniences caused by the traders. It was said that a construction company working on the road had also made appeal to the government to check the activities.

 A senior policeman, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said, “Ayuba and other policemen were posted to the area to chase away traders who had taken over that portion of the road.

 The road is under construction by Chinese Construction Engineering Company and the company had complained that its makeshift construction site was being hijacked by the traders.

 “On the day of the incident, Ayuba and another policeman were dispersing the traders when things went wrong, traders overpowered the policemen and in an attempt to protect himself and his colleague, Ayuba opened fire into the crowd and killed a trader (Mohammed).

 “Ayuba’s colleague immediately fled, leaving him alone with the hoodlums.

 The hoodlums seized Ayuba’s gun from him, picked up stones and sticks and beat him up without mercy. “Some soldiers arrived at the scene and attempted to rescue the policeman.

 But the soldiers were greatly outnumbered by the uncontrollable mob, which overpowered them and chased them away.”

 Our correspondent learnt that by the time the police back-up arrived and managed to disperse the mob, Ayuba was unconscious from the beatings he had received.

 The policemen were said to have rushed Ayuba and Mohammed to the hospital where they were confirmed dead.

 Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, told reporters that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department(SCID), Yaba.

 She said, “The matter is currently under investigation at the SCID. Investigations will reveal what transpired.”
