NAFDAC Set to Ban Dencia’s Whitenicious Cream

Reports has it that the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration, NAFDAC could ban Dencia’s Whitenicious 7 Day Fast Acting Spot Remover cream from entering the country because the product has not been approved by the Food & Drug administration.

The goal of NAFDAC is to “safeguard the public health by ensuring that only the right quality food, drugs and other products are manufactured, exported, imported, advertised, sold and used”. This includes cosmetic products. Any product that has not been registered or approved by NAFDAC can not be imported into Nigeria.

This is not to say that every single product being used in the country is NAFDAC approved, however with the massive amount of publicity Whitenicious by Dencia has received internationally & locally with mentions on PerezHilton, MediaTakeout, Ebony Magazine and an appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s network, she has allegedly inevitably attracted the attention of NAFDAC.

As at time of publishing, there has been no medical research done on Whitenicious to ascertain potential risks or to prove the claim to fade dark marks in 7 days. She says so herself in an interview with Ebony when she said, “ Yes, There is no medical research!” In the same interview she said Whitenicious is all natural, with no Hydroquinone, steroids, or mercury.

 Legitimate cosmetic products usually have their ingredients listed on the packaging or container, the same can not be said about Dencia’s Whitenicious, no listing of the controversial pigment altering cream can be found anywhere, not on the container, not on the website…only Dencia and her chemical mixers know what’s inside the cream.

Whitenicious costs $60 for a small pot and $160 for a large one

NAFDAC Warehouse Gutted By Fire In Lagos

A warehouse belonging to the National Agency for Food Administration and Control, (NAFDAC) was on Friday night gutted by fire. The warehouse is located at the Oshodi laboratory office of NAFDAC in Lagos.

According to eyewitness, the fire started about 7:45pm. However, security officials refused journalists entrance into the premises, but eyewitnesses say no life was lost in the inferno.

The warehouse houses seized fake and unwholesome food, drug and pharmaceutical products. Confirming the incident, NAFDAC Director of Communication, Alhaji Abubakar Jimoh said the fire was caused by an electrical fault, adding that it was not the first time the Agency had experienced such. “It recently happened in Port Harcourt office.”

Jimoh said the fire affected the section housing the fake drugs and other products. It is not the first time NAFDAC is experiencing this kind of electrical fire. He then further disclosed that the Agency is planning to carry out complete overhauling of all its electrical system in the warehouses across the country, starting with Lagos warehouse. “It is an old building inherited from Federal Ministry of Health. NAFDAC has been rehabilitating it, but we intend to do a complete overhauling… Already we have contacted top level electrical engineer to start the rehabilitation immediately.”

NAFDAC seals pharmacy over fake drugs

 The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed a pharmaceutical distribution outlet, ANYIWEST Pharmacy, in Lagos and arrested its manager for allegedly stocking, selling and dispensing fake, banned and expired drugs.

NAFDAC’s spokesman, Anslem Okonkwor, told Daily Trust that the development was sequel to a petition by some people. The regulatory officers of the agency who carried out the operation said apart from the fake drugs, ANYIWEST Pharmacy, which is situated at No 1, Meiran Road, Ojokoro in Lagos, had Analgin injection which was banned alongside Tagaprox injection, Ferotone and Flu capsules.

According to the NAFDAC Director of Enforcement, Mr. Garba Macdonald, the agency’s officials acted to prevent the pharmacy from further endangering the lives of citizens.  While reiterating the agency’s preparedness to the fight against fake drugs, he bemoaned the involvement of some pharmacists in the crime.

Dealers in counterfeit drugs to get life imprisonment

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has finalised plans to present a bill to the National Assembly, prescribing life imprisonment for dealers in counterfeit drugs. The proposed bill will also prescribe the confiscation of the property of offenders aside other fines.

 Director General of NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii disclosed this yesterday while addressing the Senate of the Federal University of Agriculture during his visit to the university Makurdi Orhii who disclosed that work on the proposed bill has been concluded by a team of legal luminaries who are putting the document together regretted that the manufacture, sale and distribution of fake drugs has become a global phenomena hence requiring proactive action in various countries of the world to stem the tide.

 “As an individual, I would have opted for death penalty for offenders as the case in China because the producers of counterfeit drugs are worst than armed robbers, because aside taking the money of their victims, they also ensure their death. But human right groups argue that death penalty was no more acceptable in civilized societies”. “But the fact is that the fake drugs phenomena is taking a dangerous dimension the world over.

 With the intensified war against the dealers in narcotics, most of them have now diverted into the production and distribution of counterfeit drugs”. “Only recently, findings revealed that over 200billion dollars in expended annually in the production of fake drugs the world over”, Orhii said. 

 He stated that most of the drugs are always destined for Africa and other underdeveloped regions of the world but noted that Nigeria is wining the war against the phenomenon with the percentage of fake drugs in circulation in the country dropping to a single digit level; assuring further that in no distant time the country would be free from the incidents of counterfeit drugs.
