Breaking News: Gunmen kill Kano lawmaker

Suspected gunmen Saturday night killed a lawmaker, Honourable Ibrahim Abba Garko, representing Garko constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly.

 

The lawmaker was said to have been trailed by two gunmen riding on a motorcycle at his meeting point in Unguwa Uku before shooting him dead and injuring two others.Though details of the gruesome murder were sketchy as at the time of filing this report last night, sources revealed that the gunmen fled the scene after killing the lawmaker .

THISDAY gathered that the lawmaker who was chatting with his friend when the gunmen opened fire on them, shooting him on the head and chest, while two of his friends also sustained injuries from the attack.

The injured persons were said to have been taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment by the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) who arrived the scene of the attack.

It was also revealed that the combined team of security personnel later cordoned off the area with a view to arresting the suspected gunmen.

All efforts to contact the JTF spokesman, Captain Ikedichi Iweha or the Police spokesman ASP Musa Magaji Majia, to confirm the incident proved abortive as their telephones kept ringing without any response to the calls being made to them .

Gunmen assasinate retired DIG Sale Ningi, kill 2 others in Kano

Gunmen yesterday shot dead retired police DIG Sale Abubakar Ningi, his orderly and personal friend.The DIG, who was in charge of the Nigeria Police Force works department until his retirement alongside IG Hafiz Ringim, was ambushed around 6pm, while returning from his plastic factory, situated at Sauna/Kawaji in Kano, Daily Trust gathered.

The assailants were said to have opened fire on the DIG’s car, shattering its glasses and killing all the three occupants.

Daily Trust also gathered that the remains of the senior officer and those of his aides were deposited at Gamji Military Hospital in Kano.

Confirming the killing, Kano Police Command spokesperson, DSP Rilwanu Muhammad Dutse, said the attackers had trailed the retired police officer on motorcycle from the isolated industrial area, before killing him. The spokesperson said the killers did not take anything from the victims.

Meet The Man Who Knew President John F Kennedy was about to be killed (PHOTO)

Fidel Castro had advance knowledge that President John F Kennedy was about to be killed, according to an explosive new book about the 1963 assassination soon to be published by a retired CIA agent.

Rumours about the Cuban dictator’s involvement in a plot to murder his fierce adversary have swirled for almost half a century since communist sympathiser Lee Harvey Oswald shot the US president during a trip to Dallas in November that year.

Now author Brian Latell, who studied Cuban affairs as a CIA analyst in the 1960s and later became the agency’s chief intelligence officer for Latin America, says he is certain that Castro at least knew the attack was going to happen.

On the morning of November 22, 1963, the day Kennedy was killed, Castro ordered a senior intelligence officer in Havana to stop listening for non-specific CIA radio communications and concentrate instead on 'any little detail, any small detail from Texas,' Mr Latell claims in his new book Castro’s Secrets – the CIA and Cuba’s Intelligence Machine, set for release next month.

Four hours later, the airwaves came alive with news that Kennedy was dead.

Mr Latell also claims that Castro was aware that Oswald, who had been denied a visa to visit Cuba at the country’s embassy in Mexico City, told staff there that he was going to murder Kennedy to prove his allegiance to the communist cause.

'Fidel knew of Oswald’s intentions and did nothing to deter the act,' Mr Latell writes in the book.

In an interview published today in The Miami Herald, Mr Latell, now a respected senior lecturer on Cuba at the University of Miami, says he discovered the information in interviews with former Cuban intelligence officers, backed up by declassified US government documents.

'I don’t say Fidel Castro ordered the assassination, I don’t say Oswald was under his control. He might have been, but I don’t argue that, because I was unable to find any evidence for that,' he said.

'[But] everything I write is backed up by documents and on-the-record sources.

'Did Fidel want Kennedy dead? Yes. He feared Kennedy. And he knew Kennedy was gunning for him. In Fidel’s mind, he was probably acting in self-defence.'

UNN staff shot dead by suspected assassins

A middle-aged woman, identified as Mrs Helen Ugwuowo, has been allegedly killed in her community, Ndiagu Nru in Nsukka Local Government Area by three gunmen, suspected to be assassins.

An eye-witness who pleaded anonymity, in Nsukka on Tuesday said that the assassins stormed the woman’s house at bout 10.32 p.m. on Feb. 17, briefly asking her some questions before shooting her dead in the presence of her husband.

“The assassinated woman is a staff of the University of Nigeria Nsukka.

“The gunmen spoke briefly with the woman before riddling her body with bullets.”

The eye-witness added that one of the questions they asked the woman was: “Are you mama

Anayo? We have a letter for you.

“However, luck ran out against one of the assassins when members of a vigilance group on duty rushed to the scene and apprehended him as he tried to zoom off with the motorcycle they came with, while the two others escaped.

“The vigilance group members, who later alerted the police, gave the suspected assassin deep machete cut on his head.

“The police then took the suspected assassin to the Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, for treatment.”

At the hospital, the suspect was said to have been moved from the hospital to Enugu by the police.

A female health official who pleaded anonymity, confirmed that the suspect was brought to the hospital on Feb. 18 but was moved out on Monday afternoon.

She gave the name of the suspect as Ndubuisi Orji.

“This hospital has been under tight security since Saturday as police took over the emergency ward where the suspect was kept.

“The mother of the suspect also came to see her son crying.”

The husband of the assassinated woman who witnessed the gruesome murder of his wife was still unconscious in an undisclosed hospital.

The Enugu State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr Ebere Amarizu, said he had not been informed of the incident.

He said: “I have not been informed of such incident. I tell you, I am not aware of such incident.” (NAN)

CPC alleges plot to assassinate Marwa, Ribadu, others

With just over a week to Adamawa State governor-ship election, Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, has raised alarm over attempts to assassi-nate its flag bearer, Gene-ral Mohamed Marwa (rtd.), his running mate, Chief John Manasah, Senator Jubril Aminu, Boni Haruna and Mr. Nuhu Ribadu.

In a statement by Chief Manasah, Director-General of Marwa Campaign Organisation, CPC disclosed that it was in possession of a very disturbing report detailing the evil plots of one of the gubernatorial candidates.

CPC gave the names of others to be assassinated or kidnapped to include Chief Joel Madaki, Senator Folashade Bent, Alhaji Bawa Garba, Dr. Hassan Lawan, former governor Boni Haruna and General Haladu Hannaniya. The party alleged that several meetings were held in several places to strategise for the particular candidate.

The party also alleged that a committee, chaired by a former member of the National Assembly, was tasked with doing everything to ensure the candidate wins.

CPC alleged that another committee, charged with the task of kidnapping or elimination of General Marwa and others, was headed by the candidate.

The party said: “While we are calling on security agencies to take note and be proactive, we would like to warn the candidate concerned that we in CPC are not cowards or intimidated by these evil machinations.

“While we don’t have power, money or other instruments in our hands, God is certainly on our side. The people of Adamawa State are also with CPC. People require change, they need good and honest government that deliver dividends of democracy.

“To this end, we call on the good people of Adamawa State and our supporters to remain firm and vigilant. On our part, we wish to assure that we are for a free, fair and violence-free election.

“We want to make it clear that we shall resist any attempt by anyone to rig or snatch ballot boxes.

“We will always act within the provisions of the law.”

30-yr-old murdered with 7-month pregnancy

A 30-year-old woman, Mrs. Julie Ngozi Oshodin, who was seven months pregnant, was reportedly killed, weekend, at her residence in Utteh Quarters, Benin City, by unidentified assailants.

Eyewitnesses said that immediately the killer gang arrived the apartment, a familiar voice called on late Ngozi to open the door, saying that he was on a visit.

On hearing the voice, the deceased reportedly opened the door only to be held by the assailants numbering about seven, and killed.

It was also gathered that the deceased’s husband, Omorogieva, was arrested about three months ago and had since been remanded in Police custody following an alleged robbery incident which took place the night before his arrest. Omorogieva was said to have been arrested on his way to work.

The deceased’s father, Elder Anakure Igweadiani, who arrived Benin City from his home town, Umueri in Anambra East Local Government Area, Anambra State, immediately the news of the murder of his daughter reached him, lamented that his hope of being a grandfather had been dashed.

He appealed to security agents to bring the perpetrators to book.
