My Sad Experience in the Hands of My Kidnappers –– NTA Female Journalist

Mrs. Olubunmi Oke, Akure-based reporter of Nigerian Television Authority, in this interview with Sunday Aborisade of the Punch, narrates her ordeal in the den of her kidnappers.

Can you recollect events that led to your kidnapping?
I noticed a car following me at a high speed when I drove out of my office, moments after I closed for the day. I increased the speed at which I was driving and I rolled up my car window.

Very close to Jojein Hotel on Oba-Ile Road, the road was very bad. So I had to slow down to manoeuvre through the potholes. It was at that point that they levelled up with me and blocked the car.

What happened after that?
I asked them what my offence was. I even offered them my car keys but three of them armed with guns dragged me out of my car and into their own car. One of them got into my car and drove behind us.

Did you see where they were taking you to?
They drove through Owode to FUTA and to Ondo. They told me they were taking me to Delta State but when we got to Ore, they covered my eyes. They blindfolded me from Thursday night till Saturday night when I was released. So it was impossible for me to know where I was.

We learnt that your house girl and your six-month-old baby were with you in the car?
My housemaid and baby were in the car with me initially. They (Kidnappers) dropped them on the road before driving my car away. They later got home in a public transport. I learnt they later abandoned my car at Igbara-Oke.

Where is the car now?
At the moment, the car is with the police, in Anti Robbery Squad section. When I was released on Saturday, they gave me my car keys. I hope to get the car during the week.

Did you suspect anyone as being responsible for your ordeal?
No. Nobody sent them to me. It was a case of random kidnapping. I just walked into their hands. I don’t think anyone sent them to me because they were asking me a series of questions, ‘Where do you work?’ ‘Who are you?’

What led to your kidnap?
I think the car I was driving coupled with the way I was dressed (I read news that evening; so I still had my clothes and jewellery on), made them think I was a good catch.

How will you describe your experience in their hands?
My experience in their hands was not palatable. For days, I could only drink water.

How much did your family pay before they released you?
The State Security Service took charge of the situation; the SARS and God’s intervention were also there. So, we did not pay. Also, the fact that they got to know that I was a journalist and that the news was everywhere hastened my release.

Black Women Believe They Age The Best According To Allure Survey

We’ve all heard and seen shining exacr-ack.” Thanks to good genes, lots of ultraviolet ray-shielding melanin, natural oils and some say the grace of God — many black folk enjoy a youthful appearance way past the age others start to experience winkles, age spots and sagging skin.

Well, that notion was part of Allure’s first-ever anti-aging survey in the April 2013 issue, and the results show that most African Americans do indeed celebrate their age-defying looks.

The survey found that 86 percent of the African-American participants thought that they aged the best, compared to 81 percent of Asians, 53 percent of Hispanics/Latinos and 46 percent of Whites/Caucasians. We clearly don’t lack self-esteem.

More fab findings from Allure’s survey:

64 percent of black women say they aren’t worried about the physical signs of aging
81 percent of black women think they look younger than other woman their age
65 percent of black women have no intention of considering anti-aging treatments or procedures in the future

In addition, African-American women also believe that a woman stops looking sexy around the age of 64. That’s approximately 10 years past the sexy “expiration date” given by the rest of the survey participants.

What do you think about the findings? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section. And make sure to flip through the slideshow below for the “Black Don’t Crack” gallery of our favorite age-defying, over-the-hill stars.

Why Senators, Reps Kill Sanusi's N5,000 Note

The National Assembly on Tuesday passed different resolutions asking President Goodluck Jonathan to stop the Central Bank of Nigeria from introducing its controversial N5000 note. Members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives resumed from their recesses on Tuesday with the controversial plan by the CBN taking the front burner.

While the Senate unanimously adopted a motion urging “The President and to direct the CBN to stop all actions on the issuance of the proposed N5000 note and all matters connected therewith,” the House members directed the apex bank to put the plan on hold for four weeks. The House also queried the legality of Jonathan’s Economic Management Committee and its competence in approving the currency review plan.

The Senators said the CBN’s plan to introduce the N5000 note without the input of Nigerians representatives is illegal because Section 4(1 and 2) of the 1999 Constitution and Section 8(2) of the CBN Act of 2007 require the National Assembly to be part of the process of introducing a new currency review. The resolution arose from a motion by Senator Ita Enang (Akwa Ibom North), asking Sanusi to halt action on the proposed currency.

Leading the debate on the motion, Enang said the Senate was aware of section 18 of the CBN Act, 2007, which conferred on the bank, the power to arrange for the printing of the currency notes and minting of coins among others. He said the Senate was also aware of section 19 of the Act which allowed the bank to issue denominations and fractions with the approval of the President on the recommendation of the board.

He said, “The power being granted by the Legislature is subject to the supervisory powers of the Legislature which granted or donated the powers under the Act if the exercise of the powers is contrary to good economic conscience and the wellbeing of the people and the national economy.

“The introduction of the said N5000 note and the withdrawal of notes, conversion of some to coins and general redenomination of the naira has the ultimate effect of devaluing the naira, making lower currencies to be coined, almost non-value monies for transactions and subtly yield to the off-demand of certain international financial institutions for the devaluation of our currency.

“Section 4(1 and 2) of the constitution vests the legislative powers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the National Assembly to make laws for the peace and good governance of the federation or any part thereof; whereas this policy of the bank on the Naira may not lead to good economic and monetary governance of Nigeria requiring re-examination by the legislature.”

Enang also said that the currency plan negated the the newly introduced cashless transaction policy. “In cashless economies, high bills or currency notes such as the proposed N5000 is not required as transactions are conducted from the payer to the payee’s accounts without any need for physical exchange or handling of cash by any of the parties," he said. When asked for his reaction, Sanusi said "no comment!"
