Corruption reduced in police by 80% –IG

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar, has said the recent removal of road blocks across the country was responsible for 80 percent reduction in corruption among members of the force.
Abubakar said at an interactive session with stakeholders in Yenagoa yesterday as part of his one-day tour of the police formation in Bayelsa State that the removal of road blocks also reduced incidences of ‘accidental discharge’ by policemen on the highways as well as extortion of money from Nigerians through intimidation at gunpoint.
According to the IG, his administration decided to remove the road blocks because it has zero tolerance for bribery and corruption, adding that he is bent on repositioning the police to fight crime and restore confidence in the people for optimum partnership.
The inspector general enjoined the people to report any corrupt officers to the appropriate quarters so that disciplinary action could be taken against such men to flush the force of unscrupulous characters.
In addition, Abubakar vowed to tackle the current security challenges in the country even as he urged Nigerians to pray and exercise more patience as efforts were being made to nip the ugly trend of insecurity in the bud.

Police beat woman to pulp at bank in Kano

Mobile police guarding a bank along Zoo Road has beaten up a woman customer to pulp for boarding a commercial tricycle near the bank. Madina Shehu, 31, was beaten and harassed by the policemen guarding the bank when she went to withdraw some money from an ATM machine yesterday.

Unable to withdraw the money for lack of service, Madina decided to leave by boarding a tricycle near the bank’s parking lot, an action which the police were not comfortable with. Narrating her ordeal, Madina said, “I was just about to board a tricycle near the parking place at the bank when suddenly a mobile police from the bank rushed to the place and started hitting the vehicle saying was that where I was supposed to board the tricycle.

“I told him we didn’t know it is not allowed to take a taxi there and by the way I was coming from the bank, adding that he should have just told us to move without damaging the vehicle’s lights. As I was saying this, another mobile police just came running towards us from the bank showering abuses on me and as he reached the place he started slapping me and abusing me at the same time,” the victim said.

She also said as he continued to slap her, she remained standing while people were advising her to run away, saying as she could not run away, the policeman just cocked his gun saying he was going to shoot her. “After slapping me the man just cocked his gun and aimed at me saying he was going to kill me. He said my mother should give birth to another child, showering more abusive words on me.” According to her, it was another mobile police from the bank that waded into the terrible situation, pulling his colleague away from her.

Corroborating what Madina had said, the driver of the tricycle, Wasiu Sanusi, said he was so scared that he had to run for his life when he saw the police trying to shoot the lady. He said his vehicle was vandalized by the security men. When contacted, Kano Police Command’s public relations officer, ASP Magaji Musa Majiya, advised the victim to lodge a complain with the divisional police office where the bank is located.

Gunmen kill ex-police inspector and friends in Borno

Gunmen yesterday stormed the residence of a retired police inspector in the daylight and killed him along with two of his friends at Dala Kafanti, a suburb of Maiduguri metropolis.

Resident Bako Mantau said there was tension in the area shortly after the killings. “He (ex- police officer) was chatting with friends when the gunmen fired shots with AK47 rifles which they brought out from their clothes. The shootings were sporadic and terrifying,” he said.

Spokesman of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Borno State, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, told newsmen that the retired inspector was killed shortly after a failed attack on one of the locations of the JTF operatives.

According to him, “some suspected members of Boko Haram on a Keke NAPEP (tricycle) attacked one of the JTF Operation Restore Order 1 locations at Dala Kafanti in Maiduguri city.

“The attack was repelled and sect members retreated through narrow paths to different locations, only to reorganize and shot at a retired police inspector and two of his friends right in front of his house at about 1.45pm,” the spokesman said. He said the whole area was cordoned off and searched.

POLICE INSPECTOR SETS WIFE ABLAZE

What would make a man empty a gallon of fuel on his wife in the kitchen without regard for his 18-month-old son by the woman?

That was the question on the lips of stunned patients and visitors at the Leverage Hospital, Igbo-Elerin, Okokomaiko, a suburb of Lagos State, where the doctor and his retinue of nurses are battling to save the life of a woman whose husband, a police inspector, set ablaze on Friday after a squabble.

The victim, Augustina, hails from Anambra State while her husband, Wasiu Jimoh, is from Kwara State. With burns all over her body, fluid mixed with human fat dripped ike a fountain from her face down her chest to her fingertips. Writhing in pains, the medics, Dr Bayo and the nurses, battled to give Augustina some relief as her peeling skin glued her to the hospital bed. The doctor said she had suffered second-degree burns.

Initially, she hardly uttered a word except some feeble words expressing regrets over a marriage that has gone sour barely two years after it was contracted.

How it started

The residents of 7 Tunde Lawal Street, Okokomaiko, woke up on Friday to witness a more dangerous fight between the couple said to be notorious for constantly quarreling.

According to Augustina, trouble started on Thursday when she reported to the husband that a certain lady sent her an irritating text massage warning her to leave Wasiu alone, claiming that the police officer was her man.

The victim, who claimed that her husband had the habit of keeping relationship with other women, said Inspector Jimoh flared up and started beating her. On Friday morning, he reportedly told her that since she was stubborn, he was going to deal with her.

She also claimed that he had constantly quarrelled with her over her demand for feeding money, adding that he frequently assaults her on the slightest provocation.According to the victim, as he was pounding her, a neighbor came to her rescue and facilitated her escape to another neighbour’s kitchen, who was cooking at that time, only for the husband to rush in and emptied a gallon of fuel upon her by the fire place.

But police officer, said to be serving at the Ifako Police Station, Bariga, told the doctor that it was his wife that was bearing the keg of fuel in her hand as she made her escape into the neighbour’s kitchen. Unfortunately, he explained, the fuel exploded upon her leaving the whole place on fire.
Scared neighbours

When our correspondent visited the couple’s residence, neighbors talked about the incident in hushed tones as if all were mindful of an uncertain fate that might befall them if they said anything. Sunday Sun gathered that the victim was the fifth woman in the officer’s home, as four other women that lived with him had ran away for their dear lives.

A reliable source disclosed that his first wife escaped when she realized that the man was like a time bomb that could explode on her. She is said to be presently living abroad.

It was gathered that until Augustina came, no woman could live with Jimoh. But the victim, according to a close associate of the husband, believed she could change the man for good.

Augustina’s shocker

Asked if she would return to the marriage after her ordeal, Augustina reluctantly told our correspondent that she would wait for her family’s decision. According to her, she cannot give a definite response until she had heard from her family and that her mind was not made up.

Our correspondent also gathered that when the incident happened, the woman ran to her Pentecostal church pastor to show him what was left of her burnt skin before the pastor instructed her to proceed to the hospital for medical intervention. Her decision to rush to her pastor, it was explained, was because the man of God had been advising her to pray that the man could change since there is no situation too difficult for God to handle.

The woman has however appealed for assistance from government and non-governmental organizations.

The police officer was arrested on Friday but it was gathered that he had been granted conditional bail at press time.

During the ensuing argument, the sergeant allegedly shot the driver in his left hand. Sensing danger, his colleagues in the danfo bus sped off and left the sergeant to his fate.

In his desperate bid to escape from the scene, the cop fired several shots into the air to scare the mob from lynching him. One of the bullets he fired hit Dotun Alawiye, a motor spray painter at a nearby workshop. He died instantly.

The erring sergeant still managed to escape with the help of a motorcyclist he forced to ferry him away from the area.

He was later arrested at Bode Thomas Police Division and handed over to the Area ‘C’ Police Command where he was serving.

Chairman of Artisans Association at Doyin bus stop, where the deceased painter had his workshop, Mr. Gbenga Shoneye, said they heard the gun shots at the bus stop but did not know one of them had been hit by a stray bullet.

“We are appealing to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to ensure that justice is done because the deceased had a wife and four children,” he said.

Wife of the deceased Mrs. Omolara Karounwi, 30, said she was shocked to hear that her husband was killed by a stray bullet because he was an easy-going person who never got involved in any trouble.

“We had been married for 15 years and blessed with four children. How am I going to cope with the upkeep and training of the children?” she wept.

She called on the authorities to ensure that justice is done on the murder of her husband, while also soliciting for the assistance of kind Nigerians on the upkeep of her four children.

Woman Police Sergeant Dies After Dry Fasting, Pastor On The Run

A retired police sergeant who operated the largest beer palour in Angwan Doka, in Karu local government area of Nasarawa State, Mrs. Agatha Oche has reportedly died after under-going 10 days of dry fasting.

The deceased's younger brother, Sunday Oche told newsmen that his sister died at the expiration of the 10-day dry fasting which was ordered by a pastor. He pointed out that when family members noticed the deteriorating health condition of Agatha, they persuaded her to eat but she declined, resulting in her death.

“It all started when Agatha noticed a decline in her beer business and decided to visit the said pastor who told her to embark on the fasting. She was told that until she carried out the instruction, her business would crumble and she would die. Upon hearing this, Agatha embarked on the fasting. She refused to eat, she drank only two sachets of pure water before she breath her last.

What made her to believe the pastor , according to what she told me before she died, was because the pastor named one of her business partners with whom she always had quarrel as being responsible for the low sales she was experiencing and that the partner has consulted a witch doctor to kill her”.

Although there is no medical report to prove that Agatha actually died as a result of the fasting, a visit by newsmen to the pastor’s house and place of worship, revealed that the “man of God” have after all taken to his heels; as worshipers waited for the pastor, who is said to be charismatic, to preside over church programmes in vain.

It was also confirmed as at press time that the pastor’ has stripped off his house of his valuables and furnishings. This, according to investigation, which was confirmed by police sources was followed by threats by members of the deceased lady’s family.

Our sources also confirmed that the deceased voluntarily retired from the Force on the advice of the same pastor who is now being accused of being responsible for her death. Police have confirmed the incident, but said investigations were continuing.

Court Orders Nigeria Police To Pay Salesboy N12m Damages

An Abuja High Court on Wednesday ordered the Nigeria Police Force to pay N12million to Mr Odu Johnson, a 34-year-old Nigerian, as damages for unlawful detention and violation of his fundamental rights.

Justice Mudashiru Oniyanyi gave the order, while delivering judgement in a suit filed by Johnson, asking for N150million from the police as damages for unlawful detention.

Johnson had dragged the Inspector-General of Police and FCT Commissioner of Police to court, claiming that he was detained for allegedly stealing 12 tyres belonging to one Mrs. Suzy Micheal.

Johnson said that he worked for Mrs. Suzy as a sales boy and left without receiving his one month outstanding salary. He said that after two weeks, Mrs. Suzy called him to come over to collect his salary, adding that when he went he was arrested by the police and detained for 13 days.

Justice Oniyangi said the evidence before him proved that Johnson was held in solitary confinement for 13 days, without being arraigned before any court of law.

“There is unchallenged evidence before me from which I believe the applicant was in detention for 13 days in 2007 and was subjected to untold hardship.

“I also have evidence to show that the police subjected him to degrading and inhuman treatment. He was in solitary confinement and held hostage for 13 days. The conduct of the police in detaining the applicant beyond one day, as it is mandated in our Constitution, unless his case is charged to court, was aggravated in nature.

“I hold the view that the action of the police was reckless, vindictive, high-handed and oppressive. It also depicts an abuse of official powers and gross indiscipline by our men in uniform. It is reprehensive to the extreme and showed a gross disregard for the rule of law,” the Judge said.

Police Inspector Shot Dead by a Police Patrol Team

A Police Inspector, Clement Onwueguta, attached to Uwani Police Division in Enugu South local government area was shot dead weekend by a police patrol team which mistook him for an armed robber.

Four members of the police patrol team who killed the police officer have been detained and are currently being interrogated, with a view to ascertaining the person that actually fired the shot.

Vanguard learnt that the deceased police officer, who was dressed in mufti at the time of the incident on Friday night, was sighted with a pistol along the Railway Line at the end of Aku Street within Ogui New Layout and was ordered by the police patrol team from Ogui Police division to stop for a search.

Rather than complying with the directive, the late inspector reportedly took to his heels, prompting the patrol team to give him a hot chase.

State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the incident yesterday, said the inspector was running toward the Uwani police barracks, which is about 100 metres away, when one of the police men shot him.

He said: “Inspector Onwueguta was not identified as a policeman when sighted from a distance somewhere along Aku Street, which is under Ogui Police division.

“People always trek from Edinburgh Road to Uwani through Aku Street and reports available to us show that hoodlums always attack people within that area.

“On that fateful day, February 17, men of Ogui Division had gone out on a routine patrol at the black spot. When they were coming, they sighted somebody from a distance and thought he was a hoodlum. The policemen shouted at him to stop but he took to his heels because he was alone.

“The operatives gave him a hot chase and in the course of the chase, the policemen heard a gun shot believed to have come from either one of them which eventually brought him down.

“On getting to the spot where he laid, the policemen searched and found on him a Beretta pistol and police ID card bearing the name Inspector Clement Onwueguta.

“It was a clear case of mistaken identity but members of the patrol team are already being interrogated. It was, indeed, an unfortunate incident.”

Meanwhile, the corpse of the police inspector who hails from Rivers State, had been deposited at an unnamed hospital for autopsy.

HORROR! Nigeria Police Tenders Live Python In Court

There was pandemonium inside a court room at the Ejigbo Magistrate Court in Lagos, as lawyers, litigants and spectators scampered for safety on Thursday when an investigating police officer, IPO, tendered a live Python as an exhibit.

Funny enough, the prosecutor, Oladejo Balogun refused to accept the snake as exhibit. He hurriedly made an oral application asking the court to order the IPO to return the Python to their custody for safety reasons. He complained that he had no place to keep it and also does not know the type of food it eats.

The policeman in turn disclosed that they were tired of keeping the snake since the arrest of the suspects last Saturday and asked the court to accept and keep it as an exhibit.

The police had brought two suspected fraudsters, Kayode Oseni, 42 and Jamiu Adeyemi, 37 along with the snake as the exhibit which they allegedly planted in a house of a complainant, Alhaji Jelili Kuku to defraud him.

It was gathered that the defendants had gone to Alhaji Kuku’s house at 14, Foursquare Street, Ikotun, Lagos and planted the snake and pretended to conducting deliverance prayers for him.

They blamed all his woes on the demon inside his house. After their arrest, they allegedly confessed to the police that they took the action to defraud the Alhaji.

They had hoped to bring the snake from where they hid it in his house while they pretended to be praying for him in order to extort money from him.

They had earlier allegedly extorted N40,000 from him to buy a ram for sacrifice, which they claimed would save his life.

However, they were unlucky as they didn't know that Alhaji Kuku saw them while they were planting the snake. He immediately invited the police who arrested them.

The defendants were docked on a two-count charge of fraud and stealing contrary to and punishable under sections 419 and 390 of the Criminal Code Cap 17 Vol. 2 Laws of Lagos State, 2003.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges. The presiding magistrate, Mrs. M. B. Folami granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

She adjourned the matter till March 14, 2012, for further hearing and ordered the police to return the snake to their exhibit room till the next adjourned date.

Protest rocks Onitsha as policeman killed driver and injured many over N50

protest sparked off in Onitsha, the commercial city of Anambra State Thursday, over the killing of a commercial bus driver simply identified as Edwin by a trigger happy policeman for failing to part with N50 tip.

According to the conductor of the bus, Samuel Ekwueme who was crying uncontrollably, the police, at Anambra State Broadcasting Service (ABS) Awka Road Onitsha junction check point, had stopped the Coaster bus driver with registration number AA 763 AHB and asked for N50 tip, but the driver gave him the normal N20.

The policeman said to be a Hausa man refused and insisted on collecting N50, but was told by the driver that they just came out and that they should allow them to go and come back.

The conductor said: “The policemen insisted that we must give them N50 before we move. The driver, after pleading with the unyielding policemen, drove off and one of them entered a commercial motorcycle and accosted us at Anionwu street by New Market Road Onitsha where he shot the driver through the bus window and ordered the commercial motorcyclist carrying him to move for him to escape.”

The killing of the driver exploded the bottled up anger of residents of Onitsha and the fragile peace in the state that have lost over 30 people to the bombing and shooting of the Boko Haram as residents took to the streets in protest of the killing of the bus driver said to be member of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

It was gathered that four passenger in the bus sustained bullet wounds while others in an attempt to escape sustained serious injuries when the bus became uncontrollable following the shooting of the driver by the trigger happy cop.

The situation however took a dangerous turn when angry mob comprising of drivers and commercial motorcyclist popularly known as ‘okada riders’ went on rampage with the corpse of the driver, for reprisal attack on Hausas people in Onitsha.

The bus was said to be fully loaded with passengers who took off from Nkpor junction and was heading to the Ose Okwodu and Onitsha Main Market, when the incident happened.

One of the passengers who gave her name as Ifeoma Obi told Vanguard that “the deceased did not do anything that warranted his killing, adding it was just sheer wickedness on the side of the policeman who because of just N50 wasted this young man’s life”

She also said that when the policeman first demobilized the bus by shooting at the tires of the vehicle and it could not move again, a situation she said helped the killer cop to shoot at the deceased from the window on closed range after shattering the glass of the vehicle.

The killing took an ethnic sentiment as Coaster drivers and angry mob in Onitsha went on rampage demanding the killing of Hausa people on the ground that the policeman who shot the deceased was a Hausa man.

The situation also escalated when angry mob descended on the police team earlier sent by the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhtari Ibrahim to come and appeal to the rampaging crowd as the team were almost lynched but for the intervention of MASSOB Director of Information, Mr Uchenna Madu who pleaded with the aggrieved protesters that their leader Chief Ralph Uwazurike is against any reprisal attack.

The Onitsha Ploice acting Area Commander, Mr Roland Omatoje and the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Central Police Station, Onitsha Mr. Abdul Yusuf escaped death by the whiskers when the angry mob descended on them when they led their men to the scene of the incident .

...the coaster bus where Edwin was shot
Reacting to the development, MASSOB leader, Chief Ralph Uwazurike advised his members not to touch any Hausa man but should dismantle every police check point within the zone with immediate effect.

Uwazurike who spoke through his director of information, Mr Uchenna Madu said dismantling of all police check point has became imperative at a time when the security of Ndigbo was no longer safe even in their land.

He however, urged MASSOB members to leave Hausa people alone and concentrate on dismantling all police check points within the zone”.

When contacted, the Anambra State Police Commissioner, Mr. Muhtari Ibrahim said the killer cop had been arrested and would soon undergo orderly room trail and prosecution. He called on the rampaging mob to calm down as efforts to settle the matter had commenced.
