The standard of Nollywood movies seems to be dropping when everyone expects it to be getting better daily. In this newly released movie featuring Mercy Johnson, Nse Ikpe Etim and Clarion Chukwurah titled "Huslers", a lot was expected since 3 of Nollywood heavy weights was featured in the movie but according to Kemi Filani, the movie was a complete disaster.
ByKemi Filani:Have you ever watched a movie that got you hissing all through – after watching the first five scenes of the movie, you give up but watch till the very end just to fulfill all righteousness – that’s exactly how it happened with “Hustlers’.
Forget Rukky Sanda’s Gold Diggin or Funke Akindele’s ‘My Oga at the top’ movie, this movie - Hustlers – is the worst thing that has ever happened to Nolly wood and I am gonna be so raw/plain in this review cos I am angry.
Hustlers tells the story of a mother who uses her daughter (Mercy Johnson) as a channel of finding an easy way out of poverty.
This daughter sleeps with men for money and her notorious mom encourages her to do so.
According to the producer and director, Elvis Chucks, “I want to make history in Nollywood with this movie (History as the worst movie, right?). Hustlers is a glamor filled movie, aimed at correcting the ills of the society (correct what ills please??? A movie that passed across a ‘zero’ message, no moral lesson, no Nothing!). You will see Nse and Mercy Johnson playing the kind of roles they’ve never played before. I try to do something unconventional with the movie - LIAR!!!).
I had high expectations with the 3 big Nollywood ladies in the movie but they just shattered my hope into million pieces.
Why would Nse Ikpe Etim…Nse of all people (she really looked ugly and tattered in the few scenes she appeared in) and Mercy feature in that movie.
Nse Ikpe Etim’s character was rubbish, I didn’t understand her role in the movie – she was supposed to be Mercy’s friend but it just didn’t sum up.
I was and am still very disappointed. Why would they take their precious time and status built over the years to feature in that kind of movie, how much could they have been paid for it?
All the outfits of Mercy Johnson in this movie were horrible and out of place – when the movie was produced, she was still trying to get back into shape after having delivered Purity, so the kind of dresses she had to wear in the movie did not do her physique justice at all.
Clarion Chukwurah’s acting was fair enough, nothing more and as for IK Ogbonna…well, that’s the first time I’m actually seeing him in a movie – his acting as a ‘battery charger/gigolo didn’t impress me and I’m not sure I’l want to see any of his movies again.
It sucks even more that the movie was sold for N500 when there’s no difference between it and the N150 Aba market movies.
In conclusion, Clarion Chukwurah, Nse Ikpe Etim and MercyJohnson owe us – especially me their biggest fan – an apology for featuring in that senseless movie!
“Hustlers” is supposed to portray the harsh realities of life where morals are sometimes put aside in favor of money and other material gains at any expense but it wasn’t well delivered at all.
P.S Mercy really needs to step up her game and stop playing such roles in the movies – she should start picking her movie roles like Geneveive and Omotola Ekeinde.
