President Jonathan Comes To The Rescue Of Ailing Nollywood Stars

Help has finally come the way of ailing Nollywood practitioners as President Goodluck Jonathan makes funds readily available for their treatments abroad.

Disclosing this development to reporters is the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) Ms. Ibinabo Fiberesima, she said, all arrangements have been concluded to fly the affected practitioners abroad for further treatment. She named ailing National President of the Screen Writers Guild of Nigeria (SWGN), Chike Bryan(pictured above) Prince James Uche; and Romanus Uchenna Amuta, popularly known as Natty in the now rested TV drama, New Masquerade, as beneficiaries.

Bryan was diagnosed with kidney-related disease about a year ago, while Prince James Uche has been battling diabetes and hypertension that had left him almost bedridden for several years now. Also, Natty who is one of the few surviving cast of the once celebrated New Masquerade has been down with disability resulting from stroke.

According to AGN president, Chike Bryan would be flown to India immediately for kidney transplant. She presented cheque to him last week in the company of some of the Guild’s heads and practitioners. “Mr. President has released funds for the treatment of ailing Nollywood practitioners including Chike Bryan, Prince James Uche, Natty, and one Enugu-based actor who reportedly underwent a surgical operation,” Ibinabo disclosed.

It would be recalled that last week, it was reported how actress Franca Brown lamented the indifferent attitude displayed by Bryan’s relatives towards his health condition. Chike Bryan is a celebrated script writer and also the president of SWGN. Source

''Nollywood Actors And Actresses Don’t Make Money From Movies'' – Ramsey Nouah Reveals

Nollywood star, Ramsey Nouah has exposed the problem many of his colleagues are currently facing in the industry.

In this recent interview with Jayne Augoye, Ramsey Nouah said many of his colleagues make little or no money from movie-making. He said many of them make money through friends and supporters.

After a phenomenal rise to global fame, Nollywood celebrated its 20th anniversary recently. At other times, the occasion would have been marked with much partying, probably round the year. But things are far from being rosy for the industry at present.

Many challenges, including piracy, absence of structured distribution networks and a string of scandals trailing some of its star players, are threatening to rob the industry of its glory. While these issues are not new, they have taken a toll on the fortunes of some actors and actresses

Over the last few years, the effect of the dip in Nollywood’s fortunes on some practitioners, especially the pioneers, has become a subject of debate and concern for stakeholders.

Before now, a good number of the screen stars found consolation in endorsements by corporate organisations, especially telecomunication companies like Globacom and MTN. But the business world is fast shifting its love to musicians.

Although some of their fans have come to realise that Nollywood movies ‘no longer sell’, a number of these stars, who themselves are obviously experiencing hard times, cover up by constantly hyping themselves.

But Nollywood star, Ramsey Noah, has burst their bubble.

Noah, whose acting career kicked off when he starred in the Nigerian TV soap opera Fortunes in the 1990s, is saying it as it is for the first time.

The actor was one of the panelists at the recently held Nigerian Entertainment Conference. He did not mince words when painting the true picture of the situation in Nollywood.

He says, “Many Nigerian actors live on their past glory. The truth is that many of us (actors) don’t make money from film-making or movies any longer. There is the show part, but there is actually no business side to Nollywood any longer.

“Many of these actors depend on and make their money from acquaintances. So, they simply depend on those who appreciate their works and then introduce them to other sources of income aside acting.”

The actor whose Globacom endorsement deal was terminated in 2013, alongside that of Rita Dominic, Uche Jombo, Mike Ezuruonye, Monalisa Chinda, Nonso Diobi and Odunlade Adekola, adds, “Some people who appreciate you for who you are and for your talent will then try to establish business links that can sustain you and your family.”

Judging by the number of factions that currently exist in Nollywood and the current leadership tussle within the Actors Guild of Nigeria, it is not difficult to tell that the actors are somewhat divided amongst each other.

Noah appears to confirm this when he notes, “The truth about creative people is that they lack unity. It is very hard to find unity among them. It has nothing to do with Nollywood, in particular.

“In Nollywood all you have is the show part but not the business. We lack structure. There is no balance. It is almost as if we sold our birthrights to the wrong people. Nollywood is capital — intensive and we are aware that improvements are needed, but we lack the structure to make this happen.”

Even as The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has approved a 12-man committee of Nollywood stakeholders (this will pave the way for Nigerian entries to be considered for the Oscars in 2015), Nouah is optimistic that the future is not entirely bleak for Nollywood.

He says, “Hopefully this digital era will bring about positive changes in the outlook and technology of some of our movies. I would love the situation where creative minds put the right structures in place for the industry and then things will get better.

“I suggest that the Federal Government should impose heavy taxes on DVDs/VCDs producers so as to curb piracy. There is a need for the right structure, in addition to marketing and promotions, to propel Nollywood.”

See All The Troubles This N*dé Photo Is Causing Nollywood Actress

A while ago, photos of Nollywood actors, Muna Obiekwe and Biola Ige in a raunchy act, were exposed, the clips went viral online. Muna claimed he can't remember doing anything of such with her but pictures don't lie. Biola herself later came out to say that it was a movie and that people should not judge her by what they see in the photos but wait until the movie is out and they have watched it.

The issue is: Why did Muna lie? Who leaked the pix? Did someone try to blackmail them with this photo?

According to credible sources in the movie industry, the pix was from a video camera, not a photo camera. That means there was not suppose to be a pix of the scene until it is edited but somebody got this from the video file all in a bid to achieve a rough agenda. I hope you know what I mean by "rough". Well, if you don't, you are on your own. I can't say much.

For now, there is a lot of blame games and all that going on but all fingers are pointing in two directions

Nollywood Star In Unpaid Debt Mess, Lady Demands N130K Loan Repayment

Nollywood actor Femi Branch is back in the news again for other wrong reasons

The bulky thespian, who recently fought hard to deny reports that he could not pay his rent, is now enmeshed in another controversy.

This time around, a 32-year-old lady, Olabisi Aberuagba, has alleged that the actor owes her the sum of N130, 000(One hundred and thirty thousand naira), which she lent him in 2012.

In an interview with The Nation, Aberuagba, who was then an employee of a popular hotel in Abeokuta, Ogun State, said: “Femi, who was one of the hotel’s regular customers, happened to run out of money during a film project. I felt pity for him because he had just survived a ghastly motor accident and the said movie project was his only hope of financial uplift.”

However, the show of fellow-feeling was not reciprocated, as Branch has allegedly refused to pay back the debt, contrary to agreement.

Aberuagba further disclosed that she had explored all avenues to make Branch pay back the money to no avail.

“I have pleaded with him to pay back my money, but he has refused. The total money was N180, 000, out of which he paid back N50, 000 in March, 2013, after I had reported him to his pastor. When he stopped picking my calls, I took some policemen to the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos, where he was taking part in a stage play on Sunday, October 6, 2013. Though he wrote an undertaking to pay me the following day, he failed again to fulfill his promise.

“In fact, I personally took a letter written by my lawyer to his home at Adigbe in Abeokuta, Ogun State on January 11, 2014. My lawyer had given him a seven-day ultimatum to refund the money, but he has continued to make air promises. He must pay me my money because I am ready to take the matter to any length,” she added.

Late last year when our correspondent sought his reaction on the matter, Branch had promised to pay Aberugba, but he did not. Also, further attempt to get his comment met a brick wall as he refused to answer his calls.

The same thing played out during the week when he refused to pick his calls and even failed to reply to the text the message forwarded to his phone.

“You’re Not Qualified To Be AGN President” – Emeka Ike Blast Clarion Chukwurah

Weeks after Clarion Chukwurah made her intention to contest as Actors Guild of Nigeria’s President known, her colleague, Emeka Ike has voiced out his opinion.

The tenure of AGN’s current President, Ibinabo Fiberesima, will, according to Chukwura, end in September but Emeka Ike is dismissing Chukwura’s ambition.

The reason is that Ike, who describes himself as the AGN legal president, says she is ineligible to vie for the post due to a lingering legal case he cites.

The actor who has been challenging the authenticity of the AGN leadership in court since 2009 says, “My problem with my colleagues is that they don’t see things from an objective perspective and look at the legal merits of things. The court says Segun Arinze should not conduct an election.

We have breached that order. Ibinabo is not even supposed to announce herself as president anywhere and Clarion is not even eligible to contest in any election considering the matter on ground.”

On a recent controversial visit that a group of Nollywood stars paid President Goodluck Jonathan, Ike, who last starred in a movie in 2011, said it did not represent the AGN.

“There are people that select themselves and then appear to represent the association with an aim to connive and corner the things that belong to the populace and masses. Since the said AGN met Mr. President there has been a grave silence, which is their trait.

When some people went to meet the former Anambra State Governor they were given hectares of land for the association, for the benefit of youths. As I speak to you no youth knows anything about that land now. For five years I have been battling to get things out of the actors guild.

It also happened in Lagos State when Governor Bola Tinubu announced a property for Nollywood at Epe. Till date no one is hearing anything about that property.”

While he says the President is not to be blamed, Ike decries the level of lack of professionalism in the movie industry as well as what he describes as disrespect for the law.

Having been off the movie scene for three years, Ike says he has been busy dissipating his energy on what he calls positive ventures.

“I slowed down for a while after my last movie in 2011. I have been busy doing business. I built a brand as an engineer, abandoned it and built another brand as an actor. I studied Mechanical Engineering. I have several businesses I run, including an entertainment and engineering company.”
