Chavez sees plot to kill Venezuela opposition rival

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez said on Monday he had information about a plot to assassinate opposition rival Henrique Capriles, who hopes to block his bid for re-election in October.

"The head of intelligence met with a team of the Miranda governor, because there's some information out there that they want to kill him," Chavez said in a phone call to state TV.

In an already tense election campaign, where the opposition senses it has its best chance to end the socialist leader's 13-year grip on the South American nation, Chavez implied that the plot had come from within the opposition's own ranks.

"It's not the government, not at all, on the contrary."

Chavez gave few details of the alleged plot, but said his government had offered protection to the 39-year-old opposition leader and governor of Miranda state, who is on a nationwide tour to drum up support for his presidential bid.

Stoking fears of violence during campaigning among a deeply polarized population, shots were fired during a visit by Capriles this month to a Caracas slum that is a Chavez stronghold. Both sides blamed each other at the time.

"As the state, we are obliged to get on top of this situation and give protection to any Venezuelan, especially in this context," said Chavez, who is due to start radiation therapy for cancer in coming days.

"We have taken the information seriously because of the source it has come from, and we have informed the bourgeois candidate's security team and offered security."

Though Capriles is a center-left politician and admirer of Brazil's "modern-left" model, Chavez and his supporters portray him as the representative of Venezuela's wealthy elite who wants to dismantle the government's social welfare policies.

Capriles is the candidate of the Democratic Unity coalition, which groups numerous parties of widely divergent tendencies from right to center-left. Chavez implied he believed the plot came from within opposition circles.

"It's regrettable that from some sectors, laboratories of the opposition's dirty war, they are launching campaigns like that, verging on crime."
A spokeswoman for Capriles said there was no immediate response from the governor's camp.
He has been on a "house-by-house" tour around the nation with notably little security, diving in-and-out of homes and shops, normally surrounded by crowds, and traveling most of the time in a simple bus.
"BRUTAL" KILLING OF DIPLOMAT'S DAUGHTER
Chavez also condemned as "barbarous" and "brutal" the fatal late-night shooting of a Chilean diplomat's teenage daughter by policemen at the weekend in western Venezuela.
A dozen officers have been detained after police opened fire on the vehicle being driven by the brother of Karen Berendique, the 19-year-old daughter of the Chilean consul to the region.
"She was murdered by a group of policemen and the full force of the law will come down on them," Chavez said. "Whatever their rank, level, or job, they have no right to use arms like that."
Local media say the teenager's brother feared slowing down for the police because he thought it was a holdup.
The incident has outraged Chile, sent further shockwaves through the diplomatic community after a wave of kidnappings and robberies against them, and thrown a spotlight on violent crime in Venezuela that is on a par with some war-zones.
"We are going to apply the law fully, check our methods and procedures," Chavez added.
Even authorities admit that Venezuela's police are behind a significant proportion of crimes.
"This incident is because of people who are unprepared, irresponsible, without criteria and training," the Chilean consul, Fernando Berendique, told a local radio station.
"It's lamentable."

Boyfriend Tasered Girlfriend, then Buried Her Alive

A woman who was buried alive in a cardboard box today told a jury how she used her engagement ring to free herself.

Michelina Lewandowska, 27, told Leeds Crown Court that she prayed to God as she struggled to release herself after allegedly being placed in the box by her partner.

Marcin Kasprzak, 25, with whom she has a three-year-old son, is on trial with another man Patryk Borys, 18. Both are charged with attempted murder.

The court was told how Ms Lewandowska was placed in the boot of a car by the two men and driven to a wooded area near Huddersfield where the box was buried in a shallow grave with a tree branch placed on top.

Miss Lewandowska, who spoke through an interpreter, said: ‘I thought about my ring, that I could take it off my finger and try to cut through the tape with it.

‘I cut the tape from my legs with this ring. I put the ring back on my finger then I put my whole hand through the opening.’

She told the court she then started to ‘tear the box apart’ as she struggled to break free.
‘I was trying to estimate how much soil was on the box and I think it was 10cm. It could have been more.

‘I managed to tear a little apart from this little opening. Then I thought the next thing is to cut the tape because there was no other way to get out.

‘I put the tape from my face onto my legs and I started to tear the box apart.
‘I was focusing on the hole I had just made. I took my head out from the box through the hole and at that point the soil was getting in.’

She described how she was exhausted and said to herself ‘my God, tell me what now?’
She called for help. ‘I thought it won’t be easy but I have to get out. I have to get to the street.
‘I was very angry, I was struggling with the box. It was not easy.

‘I managed to get half of my body out. I was lying on the ground. I was talking to myself, keep going.’

The court was told she could hear music from a nearby pub and as she stumbled down to the road she stopped a passing motorist who took her home and raised the alarm.

Earlier Ms Lewandowska told how she was allegedly attacked with a Taser and bound and gagged by her partner, who told her he hated her.

She told the court she feared she was going to pass out as she was attacked with the 300,000-volt stun gun in the home she shared with fellow Pole Marcin Kasprzak.

Speaking from behind a screen, Miss Lewandowska told the jury she was grabbed by her partner as she came out of the bathroom and forced to the floor on May 28 this year.

She said she thought all three of them were going shopping but instead found herself on the floor with hands holding her down by her neck.

She described a sensation of being ‘kicked’ as the Taser was applied to her neck.
Speaking through a Polish interpreter she said: ‘I was trying to push him away. He was using this Taser. He managed to turn me over on to my side, onto my right side.

‘He knelt down, he pressed my ribs with his knee and continued to use the Taser.’
She said she feared she would lose consciousness and would not be able to remember the attack.

She added: ‘I think it lasted between five to 10 minutes. He said not to be afraid, that everything will be all right.’

She said Borys assisted in restraining her legs with tape, which was also applied to her wrists and mouth.

Asked if she could move, she replied: ‘It was not easy as I was tied up. The only thing I could move was my head, which was also tied up with the tape.’

It was only later when she was moved to a different part of the house in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, that she desperately indicated to Kasprzak to remove the tape around her mouth as she found it difficult to breath through her nose, the court heard.

She said: ‘He took it off for a short time and again he said not to be afraid and that nothing would happen to me.’

She described how her partner then knelt down and said he had ‘hated me for four years’.
She also told how her partner mentioned a ‘secret house’ and how she was not going to see him or her son again.

The witness described how her hands started turning blue during her ordeal.
‘I was sitting there for one, two, maybe three hours, all the time thinking why his family is not there?

Why his mother is not around to see what her son is doing?’
She described how she was placed in a cardboard box, adding: ‘He said to me to lie down as he needed to close it and stick the box up.’

Yesterday, Jonathan Sharp prosecuting said: ‘In a nutshell, this case is about a young man who got bored with his partner, the mother of his child, and he decided to get rid of her.’

The court was told Kasprzak thought she was not as pretty as girls he saw at the gym and was ‘bored’ with her.

It heard she was put in the boot of a car, driven to a wooded area and buried in a ‘shallow grave’.
Kasprzak and Borys then allegedly used shovels to pile soil on the old computer box – which had just two air holes and was just 22ins deep – and then put a tree branch weighing more than six stone on top of it.

She would probably have been curled up inside with her knees tucked up towards her chin, they were told.

Fearing the consequences of crying out, Miss Lewandowska kept quiet throughout the ordeal and as far as the men were concerned she could have been unconscious, the jury was told.
They ‘simply left her there’ and drove to a supermarket cash-point where they used her bank cards to withdraw £500 of her money.

Over the next hour their victim, ‘with great difficulty’, managed to get out of the box and escape from the makeshift grave.

She stumbled to a nearby road and raised the alarm by flagging down a motorist.
The court heard that Miss Lewandowska and Kasprzak – who met six years ago in their native Poland before moving to work in England – have a three-year-old son, Jakub.

He would go out with friends, sometimes staying out all night, rather than spending time with her.

He allegedly wanted her removed from the scene so he could look after Jakub without her and pursue a relationship with another girlfriend.

The court was also told that Kasprzak had changed his Facebook status to ‘single’ about two weeks before the attack and developed a plan of killing his partner, recruiting Borys to help.
Kasprzak and Borys, both from Huddersfield, both deny attempted murder this year.
The case continues.

How My Husband Set Us Fire

Mrs. Ifeoma Egeonu, the pregnant mother of two, who was set ablaze by her husband, last Saturday, has recounted the sad experience even as she expressed her readiness to forgive the offending husband.

Ifeoma and her two children were set ablaze by her hubby, Mr. Alexander Ndubuisi Egeonu, popularly called Sagay, inside his container-shop for undisclosed reason. The husband had been on the run since the incident happened.

Speaking to NEWSMEN on her hospital bed at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, where she was transferred to from the Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre, Ifeoma expressed shock and surprise about the action of her husband. Also on admission at the hospital were her first son, Emmanuel, who was crying continuously obviously because of the pain he was suffering and his brother, Udochukwu.

Both children are within the ages of two and three. With most of her body wrapped with bandage, Ifeoma, who is heavily pregnant, said she was surprised that she is still alive. She told Daily Sun that she could not tell what might have pushed her husband into the devilish act. She said she was so confused even at the point when her husband was pouring fuel inside the shop; “I was asking him what he was doing but before I knew it there was fire everywhere inside the container which served as his shop.

The other woman who sells provisions was the person who pushed open the door as he tried to close it and ran away. Ifeoma, who hails from Amuri in Nkanu West Local Government area of Enugu State, said that she and her two kids were staying with her mother but decided to visit her husband and celebrate the Independence anniversary with him. “When he brought the fuel, I felt he wanted to use it for his generator but he was telling me that, ‘people are wicked; that the woman who sells provisions opposite owed him and had refused to pay up; somehow he managed to attract the same woman to the shop, telling her to talk to me.

It was all confusing, but the next thing he started pouring petrol inside the shop and afterwards lit a match but the woman forced her way out as he tried to close the door on all of us. It was people around that came to our rescue but I and my children were already burnt. I thank God that we are still alive.” Ifeoma said that her husband, who hails from Mbaitolu in Imo State, was fond of beating her.

Most of the time, I will run to my parents’ house but he will always come begging,” she said. Asked if she can forgive her husband over the incident, she replied; “If God can forgive us our sins why can’t I forgive other people. I believe in God and that is all I can say for now. She, however, ruled out the possibility of retuning to the man’s house again, asking; “if it is you that somebody tried to kill, will you go back to that same person again?” She called for assistance from both government and other public-spirited individuals to come to their aid.

There is nobody to help us now; it is only my brother who has been trying his best but he can’t shoulder this alone. He has already paid the bills at Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre from where we were referred to this place; but we are yet to pay for the deposit in this particular hospital. Of course, there will be other bills but we have faith in God,” she added. Reacting to the incident, her brother, Mr. Sunday Ede, lamented the ill-luck of his younger sister as regards her marriage, saying he had severally discouraged her from marrying Egeonu.

This is my immediate younger sister; she was with me during her secondary school days. But at a time this guy impregnated her and decided to marry her. “As time went on, I started seeing the character of the man and I made up my mind that he was not good for her. Sometimes, she will return to my house and stay with us but whenever he comes begging, she will follow him again. “The last time she retuned was a week before this incident; she had stayed with me for about a week until the man came and my sister said she was following him.

I could not stop her but I warned her that she was on her own.” He recalled how a friend called him on phone on the day of the incident to inform him of what happened, which he initially ignored. “Few minutes later somebody came on a bike and told me that my attention was needed at the Eastern Medical Centre that my sister was on admission; that her husband poured fuel on her and her children and set them on fire . “Out of anger I said I was not going that they should bury her if they have finally killed her; but the messenger urged me to go that they had been referred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital.

Mr. Ede said he had never seen something of this nature in his life and expressed shock that somebody could set his own children on fire. Meanwhile, the police in Enugu are still searching for Egeonu, who had disappeared after setting his wife and children ablaze. Before the incident, Egeonu was said to be dealing in musical equipment and at the same time using a part of the container-shop, located at No 61 Mount Street, Idaw River area of Awkunanaw Enugu, as barbing salon.
