Bombs, launchers seized in Gombe, Kogi raids

Heavy weapons including 60 explosives and 51 improvised rocket launchers were recovered in two separate raids in Gombe yesterday, which security agencies said were to be used in attacks during the Easter holidays.

Six suspects were also arrested during the joint operations by the military and the State Security Service in the British Cotton Ginnery Area (BCGA) and Barunde quarters in the state capital. In the first raid conducted from around 12pm, 60 improvised explosive devices packed in cans and ready for detonation were found at a house at the BCGA area, state SSS director Bitrus Asha told journalists in Gombe yesterday.

Soon after, security men found a warehouse with a large cache of heavy explosives at an uncompleted 2-room house at Burunde quarters in the outskirts of the city. Weapons recovered there included 51 improvised rocket launchers with grenades, 48 bags of fertilizers, chemical substances and accessories used for making improvised explosive devices. Also seized were detonating wires, firing cables, timers, codes and manuals with chemicals such as a sulphuric acids, ammonium nitrates and ethanol.

A commander in the security team that conducted the operations told reporters that they received intelligence information about plans by the arrested men and accomplices to launch a major attack from Friday to Monday in Gombe, targeting the military base, police and SSS headquarters and other security formations.

He said while security men succeeded in arresting some of them, their ring leader, one Garba Sani alias Yellow, and two others were still at large. Our correspondent reports that the 60 explosives were detonated by bomb experts in a bush near the FCE roundabout. The SSS director said investigation would continue to unravel sponsors of the arrested men, and urged people to be more interested in what happens in their neighbourhoods.

“It’s either the neighbours don’t know or they have compromised,” he said. “As you can see, there are a lot of explosives, numbering about 60 prepared in tins, ready for detonation.” Asked if the suspects were attempting to detonate the bombs somewhere, Asha said: “definitely, going by experiences, they were meant to be detonated definitely and we have information on that plan.”

He said it was too early to know who they were but that they were hoodlums who never wanted peace to exist in the state. But suspicion immediately fell on the Boko Haram sect, whose followers claimed responsibility for gun raids in Gombe on February 24, during which 12 people were killed and a police divisional office was destroyed.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed within and around the city as checkpoints have been increased with stop-and-search operations being conducted. Also, movement around the police and SSS headquarters were restricted after 6pm. More bombs found in Kogi The Joint Task Force in Kogi State yesterday said it discovered another bomb factory at ogaminana, the headquarters of Adavi Local Government Area, following information from one of arrested suspects.

Commander of Command of Army Records, Major General Alphonsus Chukwu, while conducting newsmen round the location, said one of those arrested during the previous operations led the security operatives to the place behind a primary school at Ogaminana. He said they discovered that the rooms were being used for the manufacture of bombs and other explosive devices.

Chukwu said the Boko Haram sect had planned to launch attacks in the state during the Easter period. He said no arrest was made in the latest operation. The items recovered during the operation were metal detectors, police bullet-proof vests, cans of insecticide, gas cylinder, guns, cans of already made bombs, and some police and army uniforms.

Bomb factory found in Kogi

Security agencies in Kogi State yesterday made a major breakthrough as they discovered a bomb factory in Kabba, the headquarters of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area. The factory was discovered behind the Baptist Primary School, Kabba, a few metres to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Kabba.

Also yesterday, there was security scare at the United States (U.S.) Embassy in Abuja. Two suspects were said to have been arrested but the FCT police command denied making such arrest. Although no arrest was made as at Press time, sources said those behind the bomb factory had fled before the arrival of security operatives.

Commander, Police Anti-Bomb Squad in the state, Mr. Cletus Nzeji, who conducted newsmen round the factory, stated that security operatives had been working on a tip-off for a long time until the place was discovered yesterday afternoon.

Nzeji explained that when the door of the new building was forced open, they detected Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), the kind that are used to rob banks.

He noted that the suspects have been using the house for the production of IEDs for a very long time.

The commander stated that the ingredients and materials detected would be sent for laboratory analysis.

The Director of State Security Service (SSS), who led the combined team of military, SSS and bomb disposal unit to the place in Kabba, stated that the building will be demolished to serve as deterrent to other landlords.

The security agencies believed the owner of the house was a member of a suspected gang.

Found in the house were materials for producing IEDs, which include; powdery substance, sealed cans, wires, several pull-over jackets, batteries, airconditioner coolers, sawblades and ropes.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy said yesterday that it believed that there were shots fired in the vicinity of its embassy.

The embassy, in a statement signed by the Public Affairs Section said: “We believe there were shots fired in the vicinity of the US Embassy.

“The Nigerian authorities have two individuals in custody. We refer you to the Nigerian police for further information.”

However, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police command’s spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, denied knowledge of the gunshot within the vicinity of the embassy.

He told Daily Sun that the command sent some officers to the venue but said that nothing of such happened.

Similarly, when contacted, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olusola Amore, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, also denied knowledge of such incident.

Recall that the embassy had earlier alerted security agencies of alleged planned attack by the Islamist sect, Boko Haram.

This is not the first time the embassy would raise security alert in the country.
Some months ago, it issued a statement, warning American citizens to stay away from three prime hotels in Abuja.

Shortly after that, they also warned of three vehicles loaded with bombs by the Boko Haram to be detonated in Abuja.

In the two instances, both the police and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen Owoye Azazi, dismissed the claims, urging Nigerians to go about their normal duties.

Newsmen gathered that the four men arrested at Anguwan Dawaki near former Bank of the North office, Suleja, an area in Suleja which is known for notorious activities, also has a bakery near a building where the four suspects were stuffing the bombs into the loaves.

It was gathered that luck ran out on them between 2pm and 3pm yesterday when the JTF caught them on a routine check up with the bomb hidden under the loafs of bread.

Attempt to get any of the officials of JTF to confirm the incident proof abortive but a senior security officer who preferred anonymity told LEADERSHIP that the men were transferred immediately to Abuja for further interrogation.

The Security source also told LEADERSHIP that the men, before they were transferred to Abuja, had confessed that they were sent to detonate the bomb after they were given N100,000 each. It was however not clear where they wanted to detonate the bomb.

It was gathered that the four suspects might have released information to the security officials about the materminds of the mission which necessitated the quick transfer of the suspects to Abuja for further interrogation.

The Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, Ibrahim Maishanu, confirmed the arrest in one old hotel in Anguwan Dawaki Suleja after using bomb detector.

JTF names militants behind AGIP pipeline bombing

The Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta has named the militants behind the attack on an AGIP oil installation on Saturday. The task force called on the suspects to report to its office before 12 noon on Wednesday, February 8, 2012.

In a statement signed by its Media Coordinator, Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Antigha, the JTF identified the suspects as Friday Burutu, Lord Onipa, Robinson Agagudu, Eyala Karo, Stanley Uduorie, Para Ekiyes and Rasmus Omukoro.

The JTF statement reads, “The Joint Task Force wishes to reiterate its earlier warning that the suspects and their cohorts are out to swindle Niger Deltans by appropriating the identity of the erstwhile leadership of MEND to advance their selfish interest.

“For the avoidance of doubt, people who were the leadership of MEND are now responsible members of the society, having accepted the amnesty.”

Describing MEND’s statement as a “tissue of lies”, the JTF advised members of the public to remain calm and discountenance the militant group’s threat.

It noted that the relevant stages of the amnesty that was granted to authentic ex-militants and the attendant benefits were still on course.

However, MEND in a statement by its spokesman, Jomo Gbomo, on Monday said it would carry out some major attacks on oil installations in the oil region to demonstrate the helplessness of the Federal Government in the Niger Delta region.

The statement reads, “To the South African government, we accept your challenge and will show you how easy it is to drive your investments out of our region. If the Nigerian government cannot protect companies like Shell and Chevron, how will they manage to protect an insignificant SacOil?

“Within the next few weeks, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta will carry out a few major attacks on oil installations to demonstrate to the world the helplessness of oil companies and the Nigerian military.

“After next attacks, there will be a brief pause as we await the time agreed upon by all groups in the delta for the resumption of hostilities in the Niger Delta.”

Reacting to the statement by the JTF, MEND said Antigha failed to comprehend the gravity of the unfolding situation in the region.

“MEND wishes to respond to the ignorant comments of the spokesperson for the JTF, Lt. Col. Timothy Antigha, and the government of South Africa through its Ministry of International Affairs. The JTF spokesperson in his little mind is failing to comprehend the gravity of the situation unfolding in the Niger Delta and attributes our attack on the Agip pipeline to instigation by imaginary persons interested in benefiting from the fraud that was the disarmament process in the Niger Delta,” the statement reads.

But, the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, on Monday expressed confidence in the ability of the JTF to deal with MEND’s threat.

Kuku, who is also the Chairman of the government’s amnesty programme, condemned the attack by MEND as “unconscionable and unacceptable,” a statement by the spokesman for the Amnesty Office in Abuja, Mr. Henry Ugbolu, stated.

“Following the widely reported threat by persons claiming to be elements of the MEND to resume hostilities in the Niger Delta, the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and the Chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Hon. Kingsley Kuku, wishes to reiterate the confidence of the Presidential Amnesty Office in the ability of the nation’s security agencies and Armed Forces to tackle security challenges in the Niger Delta as well as other parts of Nigeria,” the statement by Ugbolu reads in part.

The MEND’s statement on Sunday had said the group was resuming hostilities in the oil rich region and warned security agents to heed the warnings they would be giving before major attacks in order to minimise civilian casualties. It also threatened attacks on South African firms in the country, including MTN and SacOil.

The MTN General Manager, Corporate Communications, Mrs. Funmi Omogbenigun, on Monday said her company relied on government on security matters.

“Matters related to national security are the responsibility of the government and we trust that this threat, like others, will be given the necessary attention by it,” she said.

How South-Bound Luxury Buses Would Have Been Bombed

Following Thursday’s explosion at New Road Luxury Park, Sabon Gari, Kano, northwest Nigeria, management of the Luxury Terminal, this evening called for increased security.

Chief Sunday Odum, Vice-Chairman of the Park’s Task Force demanded for the presence of military personnel at the Luxury Terminal, “because in a critical situation, the police may retreat, but the military would explore all the tactics to confront the enemy.

“It is regrettable that we have the presence of security in this park only when there is a problem. Look at what happened yesterday, the bombs were loaded inside two luxury buses owned by God Bless Ezenwata and Gobison Motors and were timed to explode at 9 p.m. and 12 midnight respectively.”

Odum noted that because of security lapses at the park, no one could detect when the bombs were brought in and left as abandoned load at the back of the luxury buses with other luggage.

“The one exploded was concealed in a 7-UP container and it was by the grace of God that it was discovered. Actually the bombs were three. Two were detonated by the anti-bomb squad. One of them, concealed in a Turkey vegetable oil gallon and hidden inside a small travel bag timed to explode at 9 p.m., while the other was concealed in a brown onion sack timed to explode at 12 midnight; but by the grace of God, their plans did not work.”

Odum, who is also the manager of Chukwujekwu Motors, said the New Road Park has recorded about hundred per cent passenger influx.

“Ordinarily, we use to have 20 to 25 buses moving out of the park on daily basis, but since this Boko Haram threat, it has doubled to 40 to 45 buses on daily basis; and all the passengers head to the Eastern route via Okene, Igala, Otukpo, Enugu, Onitsha, Agbor, Owerri, Umuahia, Aba and Port Harcourt.

“In fact, I must tell you that the luxury bus companies have to bring most of the buses plying Lagos route to Kano route because this is where the passengers are now. And this will confirm the fact that Southerners are leaving Kano and the majority of our customers are mostly women and children,” he said.

Mrs. Obiageli Onwumere from Ideato South said the family in Kano decided to relocate to Imo state, her home state, ”until everything subsides.”

Onwumere is a teacher at a private school located within Sabon Gari and she noted that since the Boko Haram attacks started in Kano, privates schools have been closed.

“It has been 22 years since I got married to my husband who is a businessman here. But I want to tell you that the anxiety is high. We just have to leave and stay alive in our home town until the government solves all these security problems.

“I am not unaware of the fact that the governor of my state, Chief Rochas Okorocha was in Kano a few days ago. People have been misquoting him that he said that we should stay back. I was there and His Excellency told us that anybody who wants to leave should leave and those who want to stay should stay, that the Federal Government is making serious plans to calm the situation.

“But my brother, there is an Igbo adage that says that ‘a tree that its branches are about to chop off stands still, but a human being whose hands are about to cut off must, at least, run. As we are sitting here in the park, we are waiting for my husband to get our remaining load and children.”
Another lady, Mrs. Edith Okwolisa from Ihiala in Anambra state said her family has no choice but to leave Kano for good.

“As you can see, the situation is so tense that no one knows what will happen next. I and my husband are moving with all our families and property. The problem is still going on and we do not have the intention of returning to Kano again. We are not coming back,” she said.

The Area Manager of God Bless Ezenwata Motors, High Chief Sunny Philips Njikonye whose bus was shattered by last Thursday’s explosion at the New Road Luxury Park recalled how the incident almost affected the trip by the bus which had already been booked to ply the East.

According to him, five windscreen on the conductor’s side were damaged by the blast and seven passengers were wounded.

Police in the city of Kano, which is reeling from a wave of attacks that killed at least 160 people last week, discovered eight bomb-laden cars on Monday, a police official said.

“We have discovered eight bomb-laden cars in different areas of the city,” a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity. “We are still facing serious security threats.”

Residents of Kano said on Sunday a bomb-laden car was found abandoned outside a government-run fuel station but that the explosives were defused by police.

The bombs found on Monday were all home-made and were left in cars abandoned by roadsides in the city, the police official said.

On Friday, bombs were set off and gun battles raged in coordinated attacks launched after Muslim prayers in Nigeria’s second largest city, with a police headquarters and other police stations, a secret police building and immigration offices targeted.

2 explosions hit Jonathan’s home state

Two explosions have rocked the home state of President Goodluck Jonathan,Yenagoa , but no casualties were reported, the governor’s office and the military said Saturday.

The explosions came after the city of Kano was hit by coordinated bomb attacks and gunfire that left at least many people dead, but the governor indicated the Yenagoa blasts were linked to upcoming governorship elections.

“Governor Timipre Sylva has just been informed of two explosions that rocked parts of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital, late Friday night,” a statement from his office said.

A spokesman for a military task force in the region said there had been no casualties.

“The (joint task force) confirms that there were dynamite explosions in certain parts of Yenagoa city yesterday. However, there was no casualty,” Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Antigha said.

Bayelsa state — the home state of the president, located in the oil-producing Niger Delta region — is preparing for a contentious February 11 governorship election.

Campaign periods have often provoked such incidents in the delta.

Explosion rips through police headquarters in Nigerian city of Kano

An explosion has ripped through a police headquarters in the largest city in Nigeria's Muslim north, causing unknown casualties, witnesses say.

The blast occurred just after 5pm in Kano, the second largest city in Nigeria. Police kept Associated Press reporters away from the building, which had its roof removed and blown out in the explosion.

Authorities could not be immediately reached for comment to say what caused the blast or say if there had been any injuries. An AP reporter could see a plume of smoke also rising from another neighbourhood in the city.

Another AP reporter said the explosion was powerful enough to shake his car several miles away.

The explosion occurred as Nigeria faces increasing attacks from the Islamist group Boko Haram. Boko Haram has been blamed for killing at least 76 people since the start of the year. The sect killed at least 510 people last year in its growing struggle against Nigeria's weak central government.

Christian Man Disguised As Muslim To Burn Down Churchch

A deadly tribal war that could have led to series of counter attacks and avoidable loss of innocent lives almost started this week, if not for providence.

According to what I gathered, a middle aged man (names withheld) disguised in kaftan and turban, was arrested while attempting to set ablaze a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of Church (RCCG) in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

A senior official of the State Security Service (SSS) in Yenagoa confirmed the unfortunate incident.

He however disclosed that upon interrogation, it was discovered that the suspect has no connection with the radical Boko Haram sect as he was a Christian from Edo State.

The SSS official said: “There is nothing like bombing of a Church in Bayelsa State. What actually happened was that a man was arrested while attempting to burn down a Church.

The man is said to have confessed to the Church of being an armed robber and the Church promised to rehabilitate him and paid his house rent for two years.

“When his rent expired, he went back to the Church demanding for additional House rent and the Church said they only promised to pay his rent for two years for him to find a job and be on his own. So the man decided to go back to the Church, attempted to burn down the Church yesterday (Tuesday evening) and was arrested. We have handed him over to the police.”

If this guy had succeeded with his wicked plan, he would have deceived many into believing that the attack on the Church was carried out by Boko Haram... May God save us from the enemy within!
