Shocking : De*d Bodies Washed Ashore After Easter Festivities

One more body has been retrieved at the Sakumono beach on Wednesday, bringing the total number of bodies washed ashore after the Easter Festivities to nine.

Eight bodies were washed ashore in two seperate beaches in Accra in what was suspected to be another holiday disaster.

Reports of revelers drowning in the sea during festive occasions are not new, but the drowning casualties after the Easter festivities appear to be increasing by the day.

Four bodies have been retrieved at the Sakumono beach on Wednesday, with five other bodies reclaimed at the Bortianor beach.

Weija Divisional Police Commander Superintendent Shaibu Osei told Joy News that three bodies were washed ashore on Tuesday at Bortianor, while two others were later found on Wednesday at the same beach.

All the three bodies were identified and later sent to the Korle-Bu Hospital morgue, Superintendent Shaibu told Joy News’ Fred Smith.

The two other bodies that were found on Wednesday, were yet to be identified. The bodies were said to be in a state of decomposition.

Ghana orders MTN to stop selling sim cards because of Poor Network

Mobile telecom giant MTN, has put on hold the sale of new sim cards and halted new subscriber add-ons following a directive from the National Communications Authority (NCA). 

Per the directive, MTN is to immediately stop selling and adding new SIM cards and subscribers to its network until further notice. 

According to the NCA, despite numerous engagements with MTN on issues of its quality of service experienced by consumers on its mobile services, the network performance on MTN continues to deteriorate. 

Last month, MTN on several occasions had to apologize to its subscribers after numerous network disruptions. 

MTN in a statement to Citi Business News has indicated though it is still engaging the NCA on the matter, it will cooperate with the authority to implement the directive. 

The telecom operator assured its customers that every effort was being made to urgently address the recent network challenges in service delivery. 

MTN is the largest telecom service provider in the country with over 11 million subscribers in the country.

John Mahama to be sworn in as President of Ghana soon

According to the constitution of the Republic of Ghana the Vice President John Dramani Mahama is to take over as interim leader as Presidential elections are set for December . The late president had recently traveled to the United States for what had been described as a routine medical checkup.

 Mills took over as Ghana’s president in January 2009. He narrowly won the vote in 2008 by a less than one percent margin against a candidate from the party of incumbent John Kufuor, widely respected for having bowed out following his two terms in office.

 Atta Mills’ profile

 Late President of the Republic of Ghana, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, was born at Tarkwa on July 21st, 1944. He hails from Ekumfi Otuam in the Central Region. Prof. Mills launched a lifelong learning at Achimota Secondary School, where he completed the Advanced Level Certificate in 1963. 

 To further his education, he attended the University of Ghana, Legon where he received a Bachelor’s Degree and Professional Certificate in Law (1967). While earning the PhD in Oriental and African Studies from the University of London at the age of 27, Dr. Mills was selected as a Fulbright Scholar at Stanford Law School (USA). Prof. Mills’ first formal teaching assignment was as a Lecturer at the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana, Legon. He spent more than twenty five years imparting acquired knowledge to students, and rose in position from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor. 

 His contribution to the University was remarkable having served on numerous Boards, Committees, and Schemes. Also during those twenty five years, Prof. Mills travelled as a Visiting Lecturer and Professor to Temple University (USA) and Leiden University (Holland), and presented research papers at Symposiums and Conferences throughout the world. 

Prof. Mills had more than one dozen publications to his credit. These include: Taxation of Periodical or Deferred Payments arising from the Sale of Fixed Capital (1974) Exemption of Dividends from Income Taxation: A critical Appraisal (1977) Report of the Tax Review Commission, Ghana, Parts 1, 2 & 3, (1977) and Ghana’s Income Tax laws and the Investor. An inter-faculty lecture published by the University of Ghana.

 His expertise goes well beyond the classroom, and is evidenced by the various examiner positions he held with finance related institutions throughout Ghana (i.e. Institute of Chartered Accountants, Institute of Bankers, Ghana Tax Review Commission). As an advocate for recreation, active sportsman and sports fan, Prof. Mills has supported the community through groups such as the Ghana Hockey Association, National Sports Council of Ghana, and Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club.

Atta Mills became the Acting Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service of Ghana and named Commissioner in September 1996. 

In 1997, Prof. Mills became the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana and served in that capacity with former President J. J. Rawlings till 2000. On January 3, 2009, Prof. Mills was declared by the Electoral Commission as the President-elect of Ghana after a second presidential run-off of 2008 the Presidential Elections and was sworn into office as Executive President of the Republic of Ghana on Wednesday January 7, 2009. 

 In July last year, Mills was nominated to be the ruling the National Democratic Congress party’s presidential candidate for December 2012 elections. The primary represented the first time in the country’s history that a sitting president competed for his own party’s nomination. Mills beat his only rival in the party primary, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, the wife of ex-military leader Jerry Rawlings. Ghana's President John Atta Mills is dead. Ghana Television announced that he died today at 37 Military hospital in Accra...aged 68. The cause of death is still sketchy but Mr Mills has been ill for while. His office also released a statement to Reuters announcing his death. May his soul rest in peace...amen.

WHAT! "Free Night Calls Is Spiritually Dangerous"

Rev. Gabriel Ansah of Adom FM’s Nasem University has cautioned Ghanaians against taking advantage of “free night calls” offered by telecom operators because “it is spiritually very dangerous”. All the telecom operators in Ghana offer free or heavily subsidized night call rates, and some telcos have commercials in which they describe the service as “anadwo yede” to wit “the night is sweet”.

 But Rev. Ansah said the night could be bitter for those who use the service to discuss their future plans on phone at that time of the night. He was speaking to an earlier submission by one Mallam Khalifa who claimed that speaking on phone in the toilet and in the bathroom exposes people to demons, which cause madness in humans. 

 The 27-year-old Mallam Khalifa, and his assistant, Abdul Razak, claimed that God has assigned angels to protect each person but the Holy Koran teaches that Quote when one enters the toilet or the bathroom, the angels wait at the door because the toilet and bathroom are dirty places. Quote “In the toilet or bathroom you are on your own and the only way to avoid demons is to keep quiet because if you talk you invite the demons to yourself and they can make you go mad,” they said. But Rev. Gabriel Ansah said he did not agree with the Mallam’s claim that one is left entirely on his own in a toilet of bathroom, as that raised questions about God’s omnipresence.

 The Nasem University Chancellor however said he believes what is even more dangerous is free night calls because at that time of the night demonic activity is at its peak and demons tap into people’s conversions. “Free night calls are spiritually so very dangerous because people take advantage of it to discuss their future plans with friends and family on the phone for long hours and demons tap into it and get the chance to destroy people’s destiny.

 “Because the call is free lots of people tend to discuss details about the travel, marriage, academic and other very sensitive plans on phone without realizing the danger they are exposing themselves to,” he said. “That is also the period most guys tend to make promises of buying a car or building a house among other things for ladies.” Rev. Gabriel Ansah said the devil and his demons do not have the power to read people’s minds but once a person voices out anything, the demons tap into the information and use it to work against that person.

 “Unless you are a medical doctor and the call you make or take at night has implication for someone’s life or death there is no point in making or taking calls at that period of the night when demonic activity is very intense,” he said. Rev. Ansah warned that those who make it a habit to enjoy the so-called “anadwo ye de” should be remember that they risk shortchanging their destinies for a few hours of free night calls. The meeting point between him and Mallam Halidu lies in his advice that people needed to develop the habit of not taking or making calls whiles bathing, eating, in the toilet, or in bed.

"The Ghanaian Government Are Chasing Us Out" y

Nigerian businessmen operating in Ghana yesterday cried out to the Nigerian government to come to their rescue as Ghanaian authorities have commenced closing their shops for allegedly operating illegally. 

 The Nigerian traders said their shops were closed because they were said not to comply with the government policy which requires them to have an initial capital of $300,000 and employ 10 Ghanaians before they can start any business in Ghana regardless of the size of the business. 

 A market in Ghana One of the affected Nigerians, Mr Ndukaku Mbanefo, who spoke to Vanguard on phone from Ghana said the Ghanaian authorities started closing shops belonging to Nigerians yesterday in Accra, the Ghanaian capital and vowed that the operation will be nationwide. According to him, “the authorities in Ghana yesterday closed more than 40 shops belonging to Nigerians and they are still closing more. 

They closed our shops because they said we did not comply with the government policy that requires every foreigner who wants to start business in Ghana to have an initial capital of $300, 000 and must employ 10 Ghanaians to work with him regardless of the size of the business. Even if it is just a small restaurant or a barber shop you must employ 10 Ghanaians and show evidence that you have $300,000 before you can start. 

 “There are nationals of other West African countries like Mali, Cote D’Ivoire, Niger, Cameroon who operate shops in Ghana like us but the Ghanaian authorities would not touch them. They target only Nigerians and I don’t know why. In spite of all we do to boost their economy and contribute to raise their standard of living, they don’t care, they just hate Nigerians and discriminate against us”.

 He explained that “some Nigerian traders had to run away and locked up their shops when they saw the Ghanaian law enforcement agents coming but when the law enforcement agents got to the shops, they would relock the shops with their security padlocks. Their plan was to give out these shops abandoned by Nigerian businessmen to the Ghanaians”.

 He therefore appealed to the Nigerian government to intervene and protect their businesses saying Nigerians who operate businesses in Ghana are law abiding and hard working, arguing that “we should be allowed to operate under the Ecowas trade treaty. When the Foreign Affairs Ministry was contacted yesterday on the plight of Nigerian businessmen in Ghana, a source told Vanguard that the Ministry is aware of it and that the Federal Government has stepped into the matter. 

He said the Federal Government has reached out to its Ghanaian counterpart and that those affected should not rush to the ECOWAS court as they have threatened. Ghanaian authorities have been embarking on hostile business practices against Nigerians who are predominantly in real estate, textile and garments, electronics, banking and telecommunication and tourism. 

The Ghanaian government had imposed high tariff on Nigerian movies and restricted Nigerian actors from shooting films in Ghana. Nigeria’s telecommunication giant, Globacom was caught up with the high cost of doing business which caused it to delay some crucial aspects of its operations last year. The presidential candidate of Labour Party Otunba Dele Momodu, said the attitude of Ghanaian government is a flagrant violation of the ECOWAS protocol and that the Nigerians who are doing business in Ghana hold the key to Ghana’s economic revival.

 He said Nigeria must stand up to the maltreatment of Nigerian in Ghana because Nigeria has been too good to their West African neighbour. Lagos state Government had said yesterday that Nigerians should stop empowering Ghanaians and other West Africa countries by taking businesses to those countries at the detriment of Nigeria. 

Sources said Ghanaians are very jittery about Nigerians especially those who are in real estate business who are buying out their Ghanaian counterparts. Nigeria supplies electricity to Ghana and under the Obasanjo administration Ghana got over One hundred million dollar loans from Nigeria.

Igbo Man Murders His Wife In Ghana

A 26-year-old Nigerian man, Nathaniel Udama Edu, is being held by the Mile 7 Police at Achimota in Accra, for the suspected m*rder of his girlfriend, Matilda Asante, 19, a senior high school graduate at South Afankor in the early hours of Monday. The body of the deceased was found in the neighbourhood, wrapped in a bed sheet and her legs tied, while her head was covered in a black polythene bag.

 Narrating the incident in Accra, the Crime Officer of the Mile 7 Police Station, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr Henry Agbeve, said around 7:30am last Monday the body of the deceased was found on the compound of an adjoining house in the Ga West municipality, lying in a supine position. 

 According to him preliminary investigations conducted indicated that the body was ‘thrown’ into that house after the act with the legs tied, the head covered with a polythene bag and the rest of her body wrapped in a bedsheet. He added that a further police inspection of the body also revealed that her neck was twisted in the process.

 ASP Agbeve said what traced the suspect to the murder was the fact that the make and colour of the bedsheet in which the deceased was wrapped, was the same as the pillow cover of the unemployed suspect after it was learnt that the deceased had spent the previous night with her boyfriend, the suspect.

MADNESS!! 21 Years Old Man Kills Dad With Pick Axe

Anas Adam, a 21-year-old gardener, on the eve of Fathers’ Day hacked his 65-year-old father to death with a pick-axe. The father, Adam Abdulai, was sleeping in his room, in the sprawling Mamobi suburb of Accra when his son allegedly carried out the heinous crime. The suspect said he was driven to commit the dastardly act by a spirit. “A spirit pushed me into k*lling my father,” he said soon after spilling the old man’s blood.

 When news about the unusual incident broke, the scene turned into a Mecca of a sort, with curious neighbours thronging the location to witness the spectacle. Although most of them could not see the corpse, they relished the gossip which usually erupted at such places. The suspect, around 11:00pm on that fateful day, June 16, 2012, entered his father’s room without invitation, clutching a pickaxe perhaps in response to the bidding of the spirit which he claimed pushed him into murdering his father. 

 Without provocation, he inflicted a fatal strike to the left side of his father’s head, as the latter lay on a pillow, leaving a deep cut through which the old man’s brain matter gushed out. After the heinous crime, he hid the deadly pickaxe and took leave of the scene. There was also a pool of blood around the corpse when it was finally discovered. After inflicting the fatal cut on his father, the suspect was gripped by an uncontrollable stress which was visible on his countenance, but with nobody noticing the havoc he had caused.

 When day broke, he went to his place of work, but upon returning around 4:00pm, he visited his father’s room where the man still lay dead with rigor mortis already setting in. Almost confused, he approached his father’s nephew, Aziz, with a story about the state in which he found his father when he entered the room. Both men entered the room and the alarm which was raised thereafter on seeing the corpse in a pool of dried blood attracted the attention of people both within the house and the neighbourhood. 

 The suspect’s attempt to flee was thwarted by a team led by the Assemblyman for the area, following which he was handed over to the Nima Police, who had since detained him as they proceed with investigations. The relationship between the deceased and his son was said to have been cordial with no trace of disharmony. However, it was speculated he could have been using a narcotic substance. The remains of the deceased have already been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy. The Mamobi murder has fueled further queries about the rising incidence of k*llings in the country, especially spousal murders and suicides.

Dog rescues abandoned infant under a bridge in Ghana

A farm dog was hailed a hero after it was discovered that he protected a two-week-old baby abandoned by the mother under a bridge in Winkongo, near Bolgatanga in the Upper East regional capital of Ghana. Officials say the dog spent the night watching over the child under the bridge. 

The dog had gone missing for hours and the owner sent out a search party into the forest to find him. The dog was found in the morning under a bridge, near the owner's farm, with the newborn deriving warmth by nuzzling against its fur.

 The baby himself is in relatively good health after his adventure. His umbilical cord had not been cut, and had gotten infected, but the infant was otherwise unharmed; he's since had all his vaccinations, and is currently in the custody of a local health directorate until new, non-bridge arrangements can be made for him. GLO faces threat in Ghana

Nigeria’s telecommunication giant, GLO mobile plan of doing business in Ghana is under threat, as it is facing pressure from the Ghanaian government to begin full commercial operations or be penalized. Although the telecommunication company initially was given April 30 ultimatum to start operations, that time-limit appear to have lapsed, going by the pronouncement of the Ghanaian Minister of Communications, Hon Haruna Idrissu. 

 The Minister on Friday stated that GLO mobile had up to the end of the day to notify the National Communications Authority of its intended launch date. The company risks paying heavy fine for non conformity with the directive of the regulatory authority; GLO mobile has rescheduled its launch date into the Ghanaian market on a number of occasions. 

 The company in January this year launched a number reservation facility which will enable the public reserve their chosen numbers on the 023-3 number series on the GLO mobile Ghana network. Tagged “Reserve your Number’ campaign; it allows the public access to the network by texting their preferred numbers to 0230010100 for their confirmation and reservation. According to the Chief Operating Officer, Mr George Andah, the company has invested over $600 million in the project so far.

Ghanaian court sends Nigerian man to prison for registering to vote‬

A 35-year old Nigerian businessman, Chukwu Ebere, will spend the next two years in a Ghanaian prison for registering as a voter in the West African country.‬ ‪The accused, an Imo State indigene who has lived in the West African country for a year, pleaded guilty to the charge of deceiving a public officer. 

He will be deported after serving his sentence.‬ Speaking to the Koforidua Circuit Court where the judgement was passed, Police Inspector Patrick Adzadza said Chukwu was arrested on March 27 at a registration centre in the country.‬ ‪Adzadza said the accused presented a voter Identity Card with number 2327681 in the name of Emmanuel Osei Kojo, to Tanaso South Registration Centre at Nsukwao for registration. 

Chukwu claimed his name was Emmanuel Osei Kojo and showed his previous voter ID as proof; he was consequently registered and issued a new voter ID card.‬ ‪However, Chukwu's treachery was quickly discovered by Ghanaian police officers who were gathering intelligence on the exercise at various centres.

 He was immediately placed under arrest.‬ The presiding judge, Wilhelmina Hammon, said Chukwu could have jeopardised the peace in the country. She added that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.‬

Deaths over Power Outage in Ghana.

As uncertainties continue to hang over the operations of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), information gathered by The Chronicle indicates that many more patients continue to lose their lives.

Fresh reports available to the paper indicate that two patients who were on the oxygen support machine, and another one at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), lost their lives at Thursday dawn as a result of lack of power supply.

A reliable source told the paper the three patients lost their lives around 2:00 am when power went off at a time medical staff were seriously attending to them at the Intensive Care Unit.

Information gathered further, revealed that about four patients were on the oxygen support machine when the power went off, resulting in the death of two, whilst the other two were said to be in critical condition.

The two reportedly died while in the oxygen machine after medical staff were said to have done everything possible to save their lives but to no avail, as there was shortage of oxygen supply due to lack of power to run some of the equipment at the hospital.

The Komfo Anokye teaching Hospital has for the past four days been in serious distress with respect to health delivery, after junior doctors embarked on a strike action to protest what they described as the poor state of affairs at the facility, and the seemingly apathetic attitude of the management towards the situation.

Officials at the hospital have been tight-lipped about the death of the three, including other causalities since Tuesday when the junior doctors decided to embark on the strike action.

The doctors, at the time of filing this report, were gearing up for meeting s with Minster of Health, Alban Sumana Bagbin, have been protesting against obsolete equipment at the Accident & Emergency Care Centre, and the irregular supply of water and energy to the hospital, which they said, were hampering the work of staff of the hospital.

The doctors accused the management and board of the hospital of having done little to address the anomalies despite several petitions, culminating in their decision to embark on the sit down strike to compel management to urgently act on the matter.

Bad blood has since developed between the junior doctors on one hand, and the board and management on the other, after the authorities were alleged to have accused the doctors of being politically-motivated.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health has been meeting other stakeholders, including the board and management, to find solutions to the problems confronting the hospital.

Mr. Bagbin has engaged authorities of the hospitals in a closed door meeting at the Regional Coordinating Council, and was expected to meet with the junior doctors afterwards.

Woman Beats Pastor To Death

Ama Aboagyewaa, a sachet water vendor at the Awisa lorry park in the Birim South District, who allegedly assaulted an 18-year old self-styled pastor, who died days later, has been remanded in police custody.

Her accomplice, Patrick Boake, 22, a student and a relative, is on the run, with a bench warrant issued for his arrest.

Aboagyewaa, 54, who got offended with Pastor Yaw Osei for sprinkling some water on her, went into hiding after the offence, but was arrested and has been put before the Circuit Court at Akim Swedru, while investigations continue.

The court, presided over by Mr. Yaw Atta Sampong, did not take the plea of Aboagyewaa, who has been provisionally charged with murder. She will appear again on March 27.

Boake, is said to have joined Aboagyewaa in assaulting the pastor, until he became feeble.

Police Detective Kinglsey Antwi told Ghana News Agency (GNA) that pastor Osei did not report the incident, which occurred on January 29, at about 8 am to the police.

However, on January 26, he became indisposed and when his condition, deteriorated he was rushed to the Akim Oda Government Hospital where he died shortly on arrival

The matter was, thereafter, reported to the police, whose investigations led to the arrest Aboagyewaa, on March 9.
