The former Chairman of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association (PTDA), Nuhu Mohammad Marafa and his son, Musa Marafa, who were accused of gun running and association with terrorist activities were yesterday granted bail by a Kaduna Magistrate Court at about 5pm.

In his ruling, the Magistrate of Court 1, Nasiru Lere, said the accused were granted bail on condition of payment of N1milion bail with 2 sureties in like sum. He said one of the two sureties must be a public servant of the rank of a permanent secretary or a district head in Kaduna State.

Counsel to Nuhu, Barrister Muhammad Sani Katung, expressed satisfaction with the bail, saying the essence of bringing the suspects to court was to ascertain whether they committed the offence or not.

The Kaduna magistrate court had last Friday ordered the Nigeria Army to transfer custody of the alleged gunrunner and his son to the police, pending the determination of the bail application.

They were arrested and subsequently paraded by the Nigerian Army in Kaduna in January, 2012 for allegedly being in possession of ammunitions and other items, including a bottle with contents suspected to be explosives.

The magistrate after granting the bail adjourned the case till March 8, for hearing.
