A middle-aged woman, identified as Mrs Helen Ugwuowo, has been allegedly killed in her community, Ndiagu Nru in Nsukka Local Government Area by three gunmen, suspected to be assassins.
An eye-witness who pleaded anonymity, in Nsukka on Tuesday said that the assassins stormed the woman’s house at bout 10.32 p.m. on Feb. 17, briefly asking her some questions before shooting her dead in the presence of her husband.
“The assassinated woman is a staff of the University of Nigeria Nsukka.
“The gunmen spoke briefly with the woman before riddling her body with bullets.”
The eye-witness added that one of the questions they asked the woman was: “Are you mama
Anayo? We have a letter for you.
“However, luck ran out against one of the assassins when members of a vigilance group on duty rushed to the scene and apprehended him as he tried to zoom off with the motorcycle they came with, while the two others escaped.
“The vigilance group members, who later alerted the police, gave the suspected assassin deep machete cut on his head.
“The police then took the suspected assassin to the Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, for treatment.”
At the hospital, the suspect was said to have been moved from the hospital to Enugu by the police.
A female health official who pleaded anonymity, confirmed that the suspect was brought to the hospital on Feb. 18 but was moved out on Monday afternoon.
She gave the name of the suspect as Ndubuisi Orji.
“This hospital has been under tight security since Saturday as police took over the emergency ward where the suspect was kept.
“The mother of the suspect also came to see her son crying.”
The husband of the assassinated woman who witnessed the gruesome murder of his wife was still unconscious in an undisclosed hospital.
The Enugu State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr Ebere Amarizu, said he had not been informed of the incident.
He said: “I have not been informed of such incident. I tell you, I am not aware of such incident.” (NAN)
