TRAGIC: 25 Pupils Faint After Inhaling Gas in Lagos

When are we going to get better, this country is in perils, from terrorist attacks to natural and man-made illnesses, the government ought to do something about this quickly.

There was confusion at Ogba Junior Grammar School, Lagos, on Thursday after about 22 pupils fell unconscious.

It was discovered that the incident was caused by a gaseous substance emitting from a neighbouring laboratory, close to the school. The chemical was said to have engulfed the entire school.

When news agencies visited the school premises, it was deserted. However, a security guard, who did not identify himself, said the incident occurred around 1pm.

He said, “I was just by the gate when I perceived this offensive smell. I quickly ran to a corner and covered my nose with my shirt.

“Pupils came running, saying some of their colleagues had fainted. When the smell subsided, teachers rallied around and rushed them to a hospital.

“I don’t know the exact number of pupils affected but they were over 20. A few minutes later, emergency officials came around to attend to the victims.”

We need serious help in this country before something more disastrous happens.

Okada Drivers sue Lagos state Government

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has placed a total ban on commercial motorcycle (okada) operation in Ikeja area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

As a result of the ban, okada riders in Ikeja have sued the Lagos State Government for banning them from carrying out their legal trade at the Federal High Court, Ikeja, while the matter came up at the court on Wednesday.

As a result of the ban, okada operation in Ikeja has been paralysed, except for the few brave ones who dared to move as police are everywhere on the order of the Commissioner of Police to arrest any rider found operating in major roads in Ikeja.

Hundreds of motorcycles have been impounded by the police.

A statement issued by the Office of the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos Police Command and signed by the head, Joseph Jaiyeoba, said the state government and the police took the decision to ban okada because of the high rate of robbery involving the use of okadas.

According to the statement issued the okada unions in Ikeja, the police stated that “due to increasing rate of criminality through the use of motorcycles, popularly known as okada, the Lagos State Government in collaboration with the Lagos State Police Command have decided to put a total ban on okada within Ikeja axis.”

The statement said no okada rider must be found in areas such as Oba Akran, Bank Anthony Way, Isaac John, Opebi Link Bridge, Adekunle Fajuyi Way, Acme Road, Alausa, Oregun, Simbiat Abiola Way and Kodeso Road with immediate effect.

Following the ban, okada operation has been restricted to inner and remote streets in Ikeja.

Lagos State Shuts Down Seven Churches Over Noise Pollution

The Lagos State Government has shut down the Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Ministry and six other churches in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria over noise pollution.

Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA stormed a branch of the Lord’s Chosen Church at 25 Omobola Street, Lawanson, Surulere area at the weekend and shut it down.

Other affected churches are Bible Church, FESTAC; The Chapter of Christ Church, Oregun, Ikeja; Assemblies of God Church, Ikeja; The Golden Gate Church, Ifako-Ijaiye and Seek and Save Ministry, Abule Egba.

The closure of the churches is coming after pre-sanction notices were given to the churches to abate the noise pollution emanating from their worship centres.

General Manager, LASEPA, Engr. Rasheed Shabi said the closure of the churches became imperative after several abatement notices issued to them were disregarded.

According to him, some of the churches even rebuffed meetings called by the agency on how to resolve the issue.

“The agency’s stance is clear on issue of noise pollution level permitted. This has been communicated to all worship centres in the state.

“The level of noise pollution allowed in the state is between 55 decibel during the day and 42 to 45 decibel at night,” he said.

Shabi said the state government was determined to reduce noise pollution in the state because of the anomalies and diseases related to it.

He enjoined worship centres in the state to comply with the state’s standard on noise, while suggesting the use of sound proof equipment by churches to reduce noise during their worship services.

Meanwhile, the large expanse of land in Ayobo where the temporary headquarters of Deeper Life Bible Church is situated may soon become a subject of litigation, as the Olalere Family has asked the church to vacate the land.

The over 150 acres of land covering Amule, Ayobo and Onikanga communities, currently accommodates the Deeper Life Bible Church main auditorium, the International Bible Training College and the proposed Anchor University owned by founder of the church, Pastor Williams Kumuyi.

Although Deeper Life Bible Church has been in possession of the land for over 30 years, the Olalere Family who now claim ownership of the land has declared the church as an illegal occupant and warned that the family may resort to court action to evict the church if it does not legalise its tenancy of the land.

The Olalere family in a letter to the church dated 7 February 2012 noted that by virtue of a 2010 court ruling by Justice Oyekan Abdullahi, the entire Ayobo community land belongs to them, and any occupant currently on the land must renegotiate their tenancy with the family.

When our reporter contacted the church over the development, secretary to the church, Pastor Jerry Asemota, said he was personally unaware of any letter to the church by the Olalere family.

He, however, said that only the legal department of the church could confirm receipt of such letters.

When asked about the Olalere family’s claim of ownership to the church land, he said: “I can assure you that we are not illegal occupants. We have been in possession of this land for 30 years and if the initial owners have problem among themselves, they should settle it amicably.”

Police ban bonfire, roadblocks

As the strike called by organised labour and civil society organisations enters its fifth day, the Police High Command, yesterday, banned the use of bonfire and road blocks by protesters, threatening to arrest anyone or group of persons who violated the directive.

This came as doctors have been advised to use their discretion to treat patients with bullet wounds before requesting for police report.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG, Administration, Mr Azubuiko Udah, who met with senior police officers, comprising Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Onikan, Lagos and various Commissioners of Police, heading police formations and departments in Lagos, said the ban became necessary as innocent civilians have had their valuables dispossessed by hoodlums, who use such means to carry out their nefarious activities.

He noted that, yesterday, the Third Mainland Bridge was barricaded by bandits, who posed as protesters, only to rob unsuspecting motorists who stopped on reaching the point. The swift arrival of policemen, however, sent them away.

Udah advised the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, to call their members to order.

Aside the attack on innocent Nigerians, Udah noted that bonfire was not only capable of destroying the road but could also destroy Federal Government’s facilities buried underground.

On the command’s position to the refusal by medical practitioners to treat patients with bullet wounds without police report, Udah said: “The doctor in question should use his discretion considering the patient’s state. He can start treatment on the patient while provision of police report is in progress.”

Udah frowned at the action of the DPO, who shot four persons on the first day of the on-going strike in Ogba, Lagos, saying findings would soon be made public.

Adding that a policeman was only allowed to open fire only when his life was in danger.

He said the DPO did not act on any directive from the Police High Command, adding that every police officer was briefed on how to comport himself prior to the strike.

400-Level Female Student Dies in Lover's Home after S*x

The parents of a final year student of the Lagos State University, LASU, have been thrown into mourning following the controversial death of their daughter, Chinyere Ezeala, "after a marathon s*x".

According to the Police at Ejigbo where the deceased boyfriend Ifeanyi Sunday lives, the 27-year-old student was found dead on her lover's bed at No. 36 Fayemi Street, Ejigbo, on Friday. Her boyfriend, who works at the Apapa wharf, was said to have gone to report the unfortunate incident to the police before he was arrested.

When asked to comment on the cause of her death, the investigating police officer said: “We cannot for now ascertain the cause of death. Until the autopsy report is out, nobody can say categorically what killed her.

We have just arrested her boyfriend and investigation is going on. We cannot rely on what people are saying about the cause of death. It is only the autopsy report that can disclose the cause of death.”

Sources however alleged that the family of the deceased are insisting that Ifeanyi must marry the late Chinyere according to Igbo tradition and perform the necessary rites. They claimed that she died while he was having s*x with her.

“He should marry her now that she is dead as tradition demands,” a man who identified himself as an uncle to the deceased told the police

LASTMA AND KAI LICENSE TO MISBEHAVE IN LAGOS STATE?

My findings over the past few years have shown that LASTMA or KAI uniform is what you need to unofficially misbehave in an official capacity – it is the license to misbehave in Lagos state.
LASTMA is the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority saddled with the responsibility of managing traffic and everything associated with vehicular movement in Lagos state while the KAI brigade’s responsibility is to kick against indiscipline, both organizations were established by and subject to Lagos state laws. Several stories abound about the excesses of LASTMA officials in every part of Lagos, they have over stepped their bounds severally and the only thing they understand about traffic management is towing of vehicles and if you question or try to prove a point to the officials, your fine increases.

Of particular interest is the just decided case between Jonathan Odutola and LASTMA where Justice Okon Abang of the FederAL High Court in Lagos said that LATMA lacked the power to impose fines on traffic offenders in Lagos state, the judge held that sections 9,11,12 and 13 of laws establishing LASTMA were unconstitutional and in contrast to section 36 of the constitution. LASTMA can arrest offenders but cannot impose fines on them as LASTMA cannot be a judge in its own case.

In some areas, the police collaborate with the LASTMA officials to extort you of your money, the said Jonathan Odutola narrated that sometimes in march 2011 after his car broke down on the third mainland bridge, he got the beaten of his life courtesy of the Nigerian police and his vehicle was towed to LASTMA premises where the illegal fine was imposed, it is only in lagos state that anything and everything can amount to a traffic offence.

The operations of KAI brigade is the most appalling. They have ‘kai miscreants’ that goes after the street traders, they are hired to run after the street traders on the high way, arrest them, beat them up and collect their wares, there is a seventy percent probability that somebody is being chased on the lagos high way by the ‘kai miscreants’ as you read this write-up.

Some few months back, the KAI brigade stationed their ‘mobile prison’(vehicle) on the oshodi express way (assisted by the police) to arrest those that refused to use the pedestrian bridge, while the arrests were not illegal, they could have turned back the offenders and direct them to use the pedestrian bridge instead of hiring miscreants to run after them on a very busy road like the oshodi express road.

It is obvious that if those ‘kai miscreants’ don’t collect remuneration, they would have invested their energy on some other profitable things rather than advertising their nuisance value.
During the months leading to the general elections in Nigeria, KAI and LASTMA officials systematically reduced their scope of operations in order not to send the wrong signal to the electorate.

But the PDP failed to capitalize on it to score a political point, immediately after ACN was declared the winner in lagos state; LASTMA and KAI vehicles returned to their duty post. Their acronyms have become a house hold name for fear and their activities are a ‘misbehavior-meister.

It is note worthy to commend some of the activities of KAI and LASTMA officials (who are in the minority) on the management of lagos traffic jam in some sensitive and ever busy roads on their management of the security risks pose by tramps on the lagos high way.

LASTMA deserves to offer an official apology to the entire people of Lagos (especially the Danfo drivers) for all the accumulated illegal fines they have levied and collected from motorist on the lagos roads over the years, we know that these agencies are part of the huge income generating agencies for the lagos state government and also employment creation avenues for the citizens in order to sustain the ‘eko onibaje’ campaign.

The lesson here is that mega cities around the world don’t have thugs and miscreants as part of their law enforcement agents, where officials are found wanting in their duty, they should face the appropriate disciplinary actions and lastly LASTMA and KAI officials need to be told that their uniforms are not a license to misbehave.
